Kyoto-based coffee shop brand %ARABICA has opened its first roastery at U-Venues, a complex located in the heart of New Cairo, a satellite city of Cairo, Egypt. Located in North Africa, where the Nile River flows, Egypt's vast desert is dotted with ancient ruins. This unique location, where such history and culture remain strong while modern urban development is also progressing daily, and the stone quarries of the pyramids, Egypt's symbol, inspired the space's concept design, which revolves around the concept of "stacking." To express the irregular landscape of the quarry throughout the space, 800mm square modular limestone is stacked in a staircase-like pattern from the roasting room and coffee counter to the seating area, creating random traffic flow and height differences, resulting in a comfortable space with just the right amount of visibility. Furthermore, while a full-surface luminous membrane symbolically highlights the baristas, roasters, and bean bags, the seating area is illuminated only by surface illumination limited to the benches where guests linger, creating a contrasting atmosphere. Arabica's original hieroglyphics, modeled after ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, are used as interior elements on the walls of the entrance floor and niche seating, creating a space that combines traditional elements with modern expression.
