overview

This is a renovation project for two private rooms, "Matsubuchi" and "Teizan," at Hayase, a Japanese restaurant and teppanyaki bar located on the second floor of Hotel Metropolitan Sendai, which is directly connected to Sendai Station.
The private room area, named "Bettei" (annex), is positioned as a separate building from the main house to provide the highest level of hospitality to VIPs, and its design incorporates the essence of a tea room (the spirit of wabi-sabi) for welcoming guests.
Just as the "Matsushima Kanrantei," a representative tea house of Miyagi Prefecture said to have been given to Date Masamune by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, entertained guests amidst the magnificent nature of Matsushima, this private room has been redesigned to resemble the Kanrantei, creating a memorable and high-quality space where guests can enjoy their meal while feeling the changing seasons through projection mapping and a courtyard garden.

Issues/requests

We received requests to add value to the VIP private rooms by using video and other visual elements, and also to combine two rooms into one.

solution

Each room was designed with a theme inspired by its name. Matsubuchi was named "Water Room" and Teizan "Stone Room," respectively, based on the image of a "pool" and "mountain." Symbolic wall reliefs and courtyard gardens were used to enhance the environment of each room.
To provide our guests with a special experience, we installed wall reliefs inspired by "dry landscape gardens" in the water room and "stone pavements" in the stone room, and added projection mapping visuals that evoke the changing seasons.
On the "dry landscape garden wall," images are projected of gently flowing ripples and life breathing within the silence: cherry blossoms fluttering in spring, green leaves flowing in summer, changing to autumn leaves in fall, and snow falling as winter approaches.
On the "cobblestone wall," light slowly shines in, evoking memories of time. Greenery sprouts there, flowers bloom with the arrival of spring, butterflies flutter about, sparrows visit from time to time, and as red dragonflies fly, the scene transforms into one that evokes the feeling of autumn.
Along with these evocative visuals, we incorporated courtyard gardens visible through shoji screens, tailored to the theme of each room, to amplify the imagery. In addition, opening the partitions allows guests to experience two different effects simultaneously, creating a space designed to provide the utmost hospitality for VIPs.
