About NOMURA SCENES

Since our founding in 1892, NOMURA’s spatial creation professionals have worked with a variety of spaces. In our early years, we gained attention for designing dangaeshi stage mechanisms used in popular chrysanthemum doll performances. From there, our business expanded to include displays for expositions and decorations and events for department stores. Today, we create a full range of the spaces society calls for, including stores, hotels, offices, museums, libraries, and amusement facilities..
For over 130 years, we have continued to bring the people using the spaces we design delight and passion. To do this, we have had to seriously address the challenges our clients face. Still today, this is embedded in NOMURA’s DNA.
Even so, society is changing at a tremendous speed. Beyond people’s lifestyles and work, digitalization is significantly altering the very structure of society. As people’s values diversify, there is also a growing demand for new forms of “delight and passion.”
At NOMURA, we uphold a management philosophy of “creating enriching environments.” Simply responding to existing challenges is not enough to achieve this in our age of rapid change. We believe it is necessary to propose new value and create our own future.

Every day we work on spatial creation. So to start, we have to consider the definition of “space.” While definitions and perspectives vary, at the very least, we don’t just mean the container-like spaces formed by physical elements such as walls and floors. The experiences and emotions of those who spend time there, the relationships they nurture, their conversations — the flow of time — we include all of these things in what we call “space.”
While we might be looking at an “empty” space, what excites us is thinking about how people will spend time there, the sort of experiences they will have—the endless possibilities of the scenes that will unfold. What’s attractive about lively towns and facilities where a diversity of people spend their lives is that they create scenes like you wouldn’t find anywhere else. In other words, we believe that space always exists in relation to people and is what we create with people in mind.

As we explore ever new possibilities for the spaces we design, we will share our thoughts regarding them with everyone involved in their creation. And so, this publication serves as a place for reflection, providing a reference in support of that journey.
We at NOMURA will continue our search for ideal spatial designs, together with you.
