overview

In order to provide guests with the hotel's concept of "experiencing Hokkaido," we planned to create the ultimate locally produced, locally consumed hotel with sustainability in mind, while respecting the culture and ways of thinking that have been cherished in this area.

Not only did we use wood, stone, and earth from Hokkaido as building materials for the exterior, interiors, and structure, but we also aimed to make full use of materials by making furniture that made effective use of building material scraps.
Additionally, some of the furniture in the hotel lounge is made in Asahikawa, a city famous for its furniture, using wood from Hokkaido, and the hotel also collaborates with local producers in hosting regular markets as events, creating connections between the hotel and the local community in a variety of ways, both in terms of soft and hard aspects.
The restaurant not only uses ingredients from Hokkaido (agricultural, marine, dairy products, etc.), but also uses ingredients from producers where you can see the faces of the producers. The guest rooms are equipped with wooden speakers and record players in honor of Sapporo, the city of jazz. Beautiful photos from all over Hokkaido taken by five photographers are displayed as art, and the hotel has incorporated various mechanisms to allow guests to experience Hokkaido deeply through all five senses.

For those who are visiting Sapporo or those who are starting from there, this hotel offers a one-of-a-kind experience that can only be found in Sapporo, the gateway to Hokkaido.

Issues/requests

The challenge was how to make guests feel how they have come to Hokkaido and how they are staying at Hokkaido's wooden hotel, and how to express it in an easy-to-understand manner.

solution

In concept design the interior, we were constantly thinking about "what is important?" and carefully selecting materials, colors and shapes so that guests would take home at least one thing as a memory.
In order to create concept design that would resonate with guests, we stripped away everything except what is essential to create a symbolic space, but at the same time, we were conscious of striking a balance between the two, so as not to become too stoic and lose the sense of comfort.
