overview

Tokiwakan is a ryokan inn in Gamagori, Aichi Prefecture, that was loved by many literary figures during the late Meiji period. The Ume Annex, which was built as a separate building, has been reborn over time as The Cove, a rental accommodation facility at Gamagori Classic Hotel.

Based on the concept of "encountering the blessings of the region surrounding Mikawa Bay and spending time savoring them with all five senses," we have made the most of the famous building, a registered tangible cultural property, and the view it offers, which sits on a small hill facing Takeshima, which floats in the calm waters of Mikawa Bay. Furthermore, by adding "newness" where necessary, we have created an extraordinary lodging experience through a pleasant contrast.
The cafe is packed with many of the charms of the region, including artwork created using traditional techniques passed down in the area and the development of original drinks made by local people using local ingredients.

Issues/requests

The building, a registered tangible cultural property that was built as a detached ryokan in the early Showa period and has since been used as Ume Bettei and then as Ryotei Takeshima, will be utilized while preserving the view of Takeshima from the building to the greatest extent possible.
The goal was to resolve functional issues such as the fact that about half of the building had been extensively renovated into a Japanese restaurant and the entrance being close to the route taken by hotel guests.
By transforming it into a high-added-value accommodation facility, we hope to create a ripple effect on the main hotel building, ultimately leading to an increase in the number of tourists to Gamagori.

These were the objectives and goals of this renovation.

solution

A private front garden was created in front of the entrance, allowing guests to forget the real world. Areas that retained the original atmosphere of the building were carefully examined, and new elements were incorporated in areas that did not, allowing the interfering areas that flowed back and forth between these times to coexist and creating a comfortable sense of incongruity. In addition, we planned for Takeshima to be visible from anywhere in the living room, bedroom, spa, and bathroom, adding a special experience that makes the most of the view.
Furthermore, in order to maximize the value of the in-room stay experience, we created an original logo and developed original aromas, paying careful attention to even the amenities.
