overview

Located right in front of Koitoi Coast in Hokkaido, Roadside Station Shiranuka Koitokan is a rare roadside station that also functions as an RV park (*1), with showers, a sauna, and a coin laundry, making it a comfortable facility for enjoying your road trip.

There are also restaurants serving local ingredients from Shiranuka-cho, and on sunny days you can enjoy the beautiful view of Koitoi Beach from the "Azumashi Living" with its ocean view and the observation deck on the second floor. In addition, based on Shiranuka-cho's idea of "being the best place in Japan to support child-rearing," the facility is equipped with a kids and family space (Koko Park).

As a consortium member, we participated in the DBO (*2) of this project, focusing mainly on planning work, and after receiving the contract, we promoted the work as part of the construction JV (*3), while also working on a wide range of tasks including interiors design and sign planning.

*1 A car camping facility certified by the Japan RV Association.

*2 DBO (Design, Build, Operate): One of the public-private partnership methods in which design, construction, maintenance, management, and operation are comprehensively ordered from private companies.

*3 Joint venture system. A business organization formed by multiple companies for the purpose of receiving and construction a single construction project.

Issues/requests

A reconstruction project was planned due to the deterioration of the existing roadside station facility, which had been in operation for 29 years. The basic policy was to "take advantage of the location's characteristics to create an information hub that condenses the charms of Shiranuka," and there was a request to make it a base for communication and tourism that would spread the charms of the town.

solution

Based on the town's basic concept, we planned to set up an RV park, sauna, and coin laundry as a base for interaction and tourism, and also to have a kids' space to support child rearing. In addition, in rebuilding this facility, we also took into consideration the environmental conservation of the neighboring Koito Beach.
