overview

Located near Shijo Omiya in Kyoto, this project transformed an entire alley lined with townhouses that are over 110 years old into a ryokan.
Passing through the reception building, you will come across a stone-paved alleyway lined with 23 guest rooms, a warehouse building, and a restaurant building, creating a gorgeous scene reminiscent of the entertainment district of the Edo period. There are five types of guest rooms, all themed around the natural beauty of Kyoto, allowing you to experience the charms of the region in both tangible and intangible culture.

The restaurant building in the center of the alley is a Japanese beef restaurant, and is a one-of-a-kind space that promotes Japanese culture, including food, to the world. The site is approximately 1,400 m2 and includes 26 wooden buildings, making this the largest-scale revitalization project in Kyoto's history, attracting attention from Kyoto City.

Issues/requests

The 24 townhouses that surround the alley are over 100 years old and are in danger of being demolished to make way for a hotel, so a project was launched to find new value in these buildings while making use of their miraculous materials.
The new development required various adjustments with the surrounding residents.

solution

With several residents living in the area, we participated in existing surveys and discussed with the client how to make the most of the original materials.
We coordinated the coordination of rights such as the site, designed two new buildings (reception building and restaurant building) while concept design the entire alley, construction the existing guest room building was built while undertaking construction on a design supervision and cost-on basis.
