Kakegawa City indoor playground "mirocco"
movie
overview
The new indoor playground "mirocco," which opened in July 2025 in Kakegawa City, Shizuoka Prefecture, aims to be a place where children can not only enjoy playing to their heart's content, but also where families and community members can also enjoy together.
This facility has been redeveloped into an all-weather playground by renovating the swimming pool and hot tub facility that was formerly located in the indoor facility "Tamarina" at 22nd Century Hill Park in Mitsumizu, Kakegawa City. We comprehensively took charge of the project from concept formulation to design, interiors- playground equipment and decoration construction, and operation, while leveraging our expertise in regional revitalization and facility projects.
In addition, as a voluntary DBO* project, MHI invested in the private sector to enhance the attractiveness of the facility through additional improvements such as playground equipment, built-in furniture and fixtures, and signage and graphics.
About the facility concept/space concept design
The concept of the facility is "Let's make everyday life exciting," and the name "mirocco" was chosen by a vote of the residents, with the hope that the facility will be a place where people will want to go 365 days a year (3=mi, 6=ro, 5=ko) and where everyone will come together.
The main areas are "Guruguru no Yama," where children can play with playground equipment; "Wakuwaku Base," a quiet area for children to play; "Hitoyasumi Lounge," where adults can relax; and "Haihai no Hara," a safe area for babies to play in. In addition to these areas, "This Is Cafe," which has stores throughout Shizuoka Prefecture, has opened a new location within Tamarina, offering a menu that is easy for customers of all ages to enjoy.
Furthermore, the interior of the facility, including the playground interiors and benches, utilizes local resources, with benches made from locally sourced timber, a workshop space utilizing scraps and waste materials as crafting materials, and plaster walls made from soil from Kakegawa. Environmentally conscious materials are used throughout the facility.
*DBO: Design Build Operate, a business model used to develop public facilities. The public sector commissions private businesses to design, build, and operate the facility.
