overview

As a hotel that introduces "Kyoto Toji Temple" in an easy-to-understand manner that cannot be fully enjoyed in a one-time sightseeing trip, the little-known Buddha statue mandala is illustrated, and you can walk around the city freely opening and closing while comparing the old and the modern. In the lobby, we installed a map, a large table where you can copy sutras with sand, and a wall artwork of Buddha smiling with a motion sensor.
In addition, the full-size pillar with a motif of a five-storied pagoda was used as a bookshelf to impart wisdom because the actual central pillar itself is a mandala.

Issues/requests

As an "urban tourist hotel" located near Toji Temple, a Kyoto landmark visible from the Shinkansen, it needed a deeply engaging appeal to match its concept. Since the hotel had closed down shortly after its construction, interiors was in good condition, and the challenge was to maximize the use of the existing features while also coming up with display and content ideas to enhance the enjoyment of the Toji Temple area.

solution

From the historical research of Kyoto, we have simplified the difficult Buddhist elements such as "Shingon Esoteric Buddhism" and "Mandala" of Toji Temple, and we have graphic contents that can be enjoyed even without knowledge, sutra copying experience, contents such as a map of the past and present that goes back and forth between Heijokyo and the present age. I made a proposal.
In addition, within the policy of maximizing the use of existing facilities, we proposed a lobby area that symbolically distributes content and graphics based on the theme of "Toji Temple" to add value to the OMO brand.
