overview

In recent years, a new stratum has been discovered that shows how Jomon people mined black stone at the Takayama Ruins and Hoshidoge Black Stone Mine, which is a nationally designated historic site. Therefore, the ``Hoshikusokan'' was opened, displays room where you can see the excavated strata and experience the life of the Jomon people at the time.

The color of the building's exterior walls has changed due to rust over time, conveying the message of preserving and passing on the memory of black stone. Inside the displays room, strata with a length of 20 meters and a maximum height of over 5 meters tower over both walls of the passageway, and have been recreated exactly as they were discovered during the excavation survey. The strata have unevenness that is stacked in steps, and these were created by the earth and sand that the Jomon people dug up underground in search of black ash. Projection mapping was performed to match the lines of this stratum, and the life of the Jomon people at that time was recreated in video. Through immersive visuals and impressive geological formations, you can experience the passion of the Jomon people for generations of mining in search of the precious black stone, which is found in limited areas.

Issues/requests

・Restore and publicize the impressive underground structure of the No. 1 quarry site, which is the source of black-colored stone, by stripping away the strata in the survey area and taking molds of the remains.
・Disseminate the survey results in an easy-to-understand manner to everyone from children to adults through videos and displays explanatory graphic panels.
The request was for an outdoor geological displays facility that aims to achieve the above goals.

solution

At the No. 1 quarry site in the original area of black-colored stone, traces of the Jomon people mining black-colored stone many times from 7,000 years ago (Jomon period) to 3,500 years ago can be seen. Through projection mapping, we created a performance that could be understood by a variety of people.
