overview

Recently, a new geological layer showing evidence of Jomon people mining obsidian has been discovered at the Takayama Archaeological Site and Hoshikuso Pass Obsidian Mine, a nationally designated historical site. Therefore, the "Hoshikuso Museum," displays room where visitors can see the excavated layer and experience the lifestyle of the Jomon people of that time, has opened.

The building's exterior walls have changed color due to rust over time, conveying a message of preserving and passing on the memory of obsidian. Inside displays hall, geological strata exceeding 20 meters in length and 5 meters in height rise on both walls of the passageway, recreating them exactly as they were discovered during archaeological excavations. The strata have stepped, uneven surfaces, formed by the soil dug up by the Jomon people in search of obsidian. Projection mapping is applied along the lines of these strata, recreating the activities of the Jomon people in those times. Through immersive visuals and the impressive geological strata, visitors can experience the passion of the Jomon people who spent generations mining for the precious obsidian, which was found in limited locations.

Issues/requests

- To restore and publicly display the impressive underground structure of the No. 1 obsidian mining site by stripping the geological layers of the survey area and taking molds of the remains.
- Communicate the survey results in a way that is easy for everyone to understand, from children to adults, through videos and displays graphic panels.
The request was for an outdoor geological displays facility that aimed to achieve the above.

solution

At the No. 1 quarry site in the original area of black-colored stone, traces of the Jomon people mining black-colored stone many times from 7,000 years ago (Jomon period) to 3,500 years ago can be seen. Through projection mapping, we created a performance that could be understood by a variety of people.
