overview

In recent years, a new layer of rock showing how the Jomon people mined obsidian was discovered at the Takayama Ruins and Hoshikuso Pass Obsidian Mine, a nationally designated historic site. The Hoshikuso Museum has been opened as displays space where visitors can see the excavated rock layer and experience the activities of the Jomon people at that time.

The exterior walls of the building have changed color due to rust over the years, conveying the message of protecting and passing on the memory of obsidian. Inside the displays room, 20m long and over 5m high strata stand on both walls of the corridor, reproduced exactly as they were discovered during excavation. The strata have stepped unevenness, which were created by the soil and sand that the Jomon people dug up in search of obsidian. Projection mapping was applied to the lines of these strata, recreating the activities of the Jomon people at that time through video. Through immersive video and the impressive strata, you can experience the passion of the Jomon people who mined for precious obsidian, which was produced over many generations, through generations of mining.

Issues/requests

・Restore and publicize the impressive underground structure of the first obsidian mining site by stripping away layers of rock in the survey area and taking molds of the remains.
- Communicate survey results in an easy-to-understand manner for everyone, from children to adults, through videos and displays graphic panels
The request was for an outdoor geological displays facility that aimed for the above.

solution

At the No. 1 quarry site in the original area of black-colored stone, traces of the Jomon people mining black-colored stone many times from 7,000 years ago (Jomon period) to 3,500 years ago can be seen. Through projection mapping, we created a performance that could be understood by a variety of people.
