The theme of this special exhibition is "upcycle lounge," and it will introduce the new upcycle system of "openmaterial" and the waste recycling initiatives of companies with which it has relationships. In addition, it will display furniture and fixtures made from upcycled materials produced through these initiatives. NOMURA will be displays "SCRAPTURE" on a rotating basis.

During the event, a talk session called "Happy Sustainable concept design Meet-up Vol.3" will be held, with designers Nao Kameda and Naoto Ogawa taking to the stage from 7:00 PM on Tuesday, May 28th. Under the theme of "Sustainable Materials and concept design," they will talk about the potential of sustainable materials and the associated concept design.

displays Concept
There is a global movement to propose the next life cycle of discarded items through methods such as recycling, reuse, and upcycling. The word "sustainable" has become common, and society as a whole is moving from the era of mass production to the era of optimal production (producing only what is needed and eliminating surpluses).
Once a material or product has passed through society and completed its role, does it have no choice but to become garbage after that? If it is known that it can still be used as a material, even if there are too few of them or the collection route is not in place, it is time to consider possibilities other than throwing it away. Many of the current efforts to collect and reuse generally use factory waste materials or existing stock of ready-made products from the perspective of collection efficiency and material quality, but there are many materials that are overlooked by these efforts alone. The materials handled by "openmaterial", a new upcycling system that proposes a next life for discarded materials, are also materials that have once been consumed in society and have not been reused until now because they were difficult to collect. It is necessary to reconstruct the process from collection to reuse from a perspective that is not found in the current disposal rules, expand the possibilities of materials, and recycle materials.
■ displays Introduction
Various initiatives using sustainable materials to decorate the upcycle lounge
[OOH (outdoor advertising) revitalization project (openmaterial)]
Although OOH is highly durable as a material and has the potential to be recycled, most of it is discarded due to intellectual property issues. Therefore, by applying a secret background pattern that hides the intellectual property, we solved the intellectual property issue, and by upcycling, we created value as a unique material originating from the town. At openmaterial, we focus on caps, which have a functional lifespan*2 and a material lifespan*3, and use the power of concept design to propose the next life of discarded materials.
[ARCHISONIC(R) Felt / Impact Acoustic]
"Archisonic(R) Felt" is an environmentally friendly, high-performance sound-absorbing felt panel made from recycled PET material from used PET bottles. By making products from recycled (post-consumer) PET bottles, rather than from PET material produced during industrial production, we can contribute more to environmental protection. Impact Acoustic is a Swiss manufacturer that upcycles PET bottles and other materials into sustainable sound-absorbing products.
[SCRAPTURE (SCRAP MATERIAL UPCYCLE PROJECT) / NOMURA Co., Ltd.]
This product was created as a practical and sustainable message art that appeals to emotions and memories by bringing interiors waste that is normally not seen into the public eye. Unlike the traditional scrap-and-build message, this product will be upcycled as new interiors materials for the next generation and circulated as a medium to expand the circle of co-creation. The product will be displays in traveling locations such as offices, international conferences, and art events, with the aim of inspiring many people to think about a better future. It has received the Gold Award at the Sky Design Awards 2023 (Multimedia & Visual Included Exhibition category), the Gold Award and Tezuka Yui Award at the 57th Japan Sign concept design Awards, and more.
[Offcut pulp /Yamaden Paper Co., Ltd.]
"Offcut pulp" is a system that turns discarded event fixtures, thinned wood, and wood into pulp and regenerates it into paper, aiming to improve the waste material content and develop paper that can further contribute to a recycling-oriented society. Paper made from offcut pulp has a waste wood content of 70% to 80%. This high recycling rate was made possible by focusing on the fact that the pulp used for paper is derived from wood, and building a system to replace the pulp raw material with waste wood. In addition, the technology that supports this system uses the techniques of machine-made washi paper, a traditional Japanese industry, and aims to utilize sustainable washi paper technology.
[Display2.0 / Koshin Planning Co., Ltd.]
Display2.0 is a new attempt to update not only concept design of the fixtures, but also the manufacturing process itself, from the selection of materials and colors to the design of the recycling process. By operating a recycling-oriented manufacturing system using 3D printing, it is now possible to reuse prototype samples and used fixtures that were previously subject to disposal as raw materials. In addition, by selecting cellulose acetate, a biomass material made from cellulose and acetic acid extracted from wood, as the molding resin, we can expect to reduce the burden on the environment. Koshin Planning will continue to challenge next-generation manufacturing using 3D printing and a recycling system.
[Colour Recycle System / colourloop Co., Ltd.]
Every year, 2 million tons of textile waste is disposed of. Three-quarters of this is incinerated as garbage. The "Colour Recycle System(R)" is based on the concept of "circulating materials by color" and is a new form of recycling for a sustainable society that recycles waste textiles that are difficult to separate by color, regenerating them into attractive materials. Together with its material development partner, Colour Recycle Network, colourloop Inc. aims to upcycle waste textiles in a more attractive way for a sustainable society.
[One-of-a-kind packaging upcycled by Kanro Co., Ltd.]
Kanro Co., Ltd., known for Kanro candy and Pure Gummy, is taking on the challenge of sustainable initiatives by upcycling discarded packaging materials. As part of its Future concept design Project, Kanro has collaborated with other companies in different industries on two axes: sustainability and well-being. In this project, rather than simply making cute miscellaneous goods, the company explored initiatives that only Kanro could undertake and arrived at the idea of upcycling packaging materials that would otherwise be discarded during manufacturing.

Happy Sustainable concept design Meet Up -Vol.3 Sustainable Materials and Circular concept design
.jpeg)
Nowadays, a wide variety of sustainable materials are attracting attention. Producers and companies are being asked to create products that do not waste resources and to build circular business models, while consumers are being asked to adopt lifestyles that do not waste resources by taking action on things they can easily do, such as reusing and reducing to reduce consumption and choosing alternative products that are made with the environment in mind. Based on the idea of creating a cycle of happiness through concept design, we will consider from a concept design perspective how all people involved, including creators, customers, participants, the environment, and local communities, can create happy relationships and grow together.
