This year is also the year of the "Brussels Flower Carpet" (Belgium), so a special concept design has been commissioned, and Sapporo native Suzuki has been invited to design it. Suzuki is in charge of visual concept design for projects both in Japan and abroad, and was the first Japanese person to concept design the "Brussels Flower Carpet 2016," which has been highly concept design concept design carpet that beautifully adorned Brussels' World Heritage Square and provided great感動 (deep emotion) to people, creating a new floral picture.

The theme is "Weaving Towards the Future." This expresses the hope that the flower carpet will connect the people involved, as well as the cultures of Hokkaido and Belgium, creating a new bond that will be woven into the future. In addition, Ainu patterns have been incorporated around the symbol used in "Brussels Flower Carpet 2016," expressing the hope for the future of Ainu culture. This year's carpet is the largest ever at 225 square meters, and 500 volunteers are involved in its creation and displays, handcrafting a beautiful floral picture in the square.

About Flower Carpet

What is Sapporo Flower Carpet?
The Flower Carpet originated from the festival of Corpus Domini (the Feast of the Corpus Christi). It is not created by professional artists, but by ordinary citizens, and is a citizen-participation flower festival. It is held in more than 50 regions around the world, mainly in Europe, including Italy and Spain, and there is active mutual exchange.

The event has been held in Sapporo since 2014. It is run by a public-private partnership between the government (Hokkaido and Sapporo City) and private companies. It is working to develop human resources who will increase the value of the region, run by a diverse group of citizen volunteers, from young children to people working in the neighborhood and foreign residents, and promote understanding of Hokkaido's floriculture industry for the next generation through collaboration with elementary and high schools.

What is the Brussels Flower Carpet?
Held every two years in the Grand Place, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Brussels, the 20th edition in 2016 was themed around Japan as part of the 150th anniversary of friendship between Japan and Belgium. Based on the concept of "flowers, birds, wind, and moon," Suzuki concept design the carpet to express the deep friendly ties between the two countries over the past 150 years and to wish for a bright future, through the "beautiful nature" and "beautiful scenery" that are common to both Japan and Belgium. The 1,800 square meter carpet used 600,000 fresh begonias. Approximately 100 volunteers, including Belgian citizens, Japanese residents, and begonia farmers, completed it by hand over eight hours. Approximately 100 people visited during the four-day event, and it was highly praised as "a wonderful concept design that will go down in the history of flower carpets, connecting the history and feelings of both countries and moving people."

Implementation period: August 12th - August 15th, 2016
Organized by: Brussels Flower Carpet Association
concept design: Fujie Suzuki, Art Director, NOMURA Co.,Ltd. Co., Ltd. IVD

About the Anniversary Carpet Designer

Designer's comment
The 2024 anniversary carpet is themed "Weaving Towards the Future." While using the symbol from the "Brussels Flower Carpet" that I concept design in 2016 as a motif, I concept design concept design my wish for the deepening of cultural exchange between Hokkaido and Belgium through the flower carpet, and represents a new bond that will be woven into the future. I am honored to have been able to create concept design that reflects my hometown of Sapporo, Hokkaido, and Belgium, a country with which I feel a deep connection, in this momentous year marking the 10th anniversary of the Sapporo Flower Carpet. With gratitude to the farmers in Hokkaido who cultivated the flowers for this event, I will continue to work with everyone involved to prepare until the big day so that we can deliver Delight and Passion to many people.
