NOMURA 's Social Good Activities: JR Central and NOMURA open an office using recycled Shinkansen aluminum and local materials to contribute to environmental conservation and local revitalization

A socially good initiative that leads to CO2 reduction through the recycling of recycled aluminum, floor waste, and thinned wood
NOMURA Ltd. has been involved from the concept development stage in "EXPRESS WORK-Lounge" and "EXPRESS WORK-Office," the first members-only workspaces opened by Central Japan Railway Company (hereinafter referred to as JR Central) in December 2021, and was responsible for the spatial concept design, construction, and project management related to them. "EXPRESS WORK-Lounge" is a socially good space that is kind to workers, the local community, and the environment, with interiors materials made from upcycled* aluminum (hereinafter referred to as recycled aluminum) from the Tokaido Shinkansen 700 series trains and thinned Fuji cypress.
We believe that there will be an increasing demand in the future to respond to the need to decentralize offices and to create an environment where Shinkansen passengers can work seamlessly before and after boarding. We believe that this initiative will support diverse work styles and lead to the dissemination of local resources and regional revitalization.
Efforts in the aluminum upcycling project for the700 Series Shinkansen
NOMURA, which promotes social good activities, supports JR Central's efforts to protect the global environment and revitalize local communities. Nomura is involved in JR Central's project to upcycle the aluminum used in the 700 Series Shinkansen, from the development stage of building materials to design cooperation and construction.
In August 2020, recycled aluminum was used for the pillars and ceilings of Tokyo Gift Palette, a specialty shopping mall at the Yaesu North Exit of Tokyo Station, and was decorated with images of cherry blossom petals and noren curtains, befitting a terminal station (this was the first time recycled aluminum was used to decorate a commercial space since the start of Shinkansen operations in 1964; recipient of the 2021 Good concept design Award). In April 2021, in collaboration with JR Tokai Shoji Co., Ltd., recycled aluminum was used for some of the fixtures, including the cash register counter, at The Body Shop's new store concept, Activist Workshop. (This is the first time that recycled aluminum has been offered as a building material for store interiors outside the JR Tokai Group.)
