overview

Opened in 1979, the Toyama City Science Museum is a museum that explores the diverse natural environment of Toyama from a scientific perspective. In March 2026, the first-floor geology displays room "Toyama: A Journey Through Time" and the lobby displays were renovated and reopened. This renovation was the first medium-scale renovation in approximately 20 years since the full-scale renovation that our company was in charge of in 2007.
The main geology displays room showcases the formation of Toyama's land and the history of life through numerous rock and fossil specimens. While retaining the appeal of existing displays, new sections have been added, including "Toyama's Land Masterpieces," "Toyama Field Map," "3.5 Billion Years of Life History," and the complete skeleton of the Ankylosaurus dinosaur "Gastonia burgei." displays displays intuitively convey the charm of Toyama's land and nature, connect daily life, the land, and nature, and deepen displays through video and digital technology.

Issues/requests

〇 Toyama's Finest Products
For the 165 unique displays (minerals, rocks, and fossils) representing Toyama, consideration was needed regarding cases and lighting that would highlight their historical value.
Toyama Field Map
The selection and consideration of new map materials to replace the current aerial photograph floor tiles, which provide an overview of Toyama Prefecture's topography, was required. Furthermore, consideration was needed to avoid the influence of ambient light on model materials, image brightness, and other factors necessary for realizing topographic model projection mapping.
3.5 billion years of the history of life
For the "wall-to-wall display of numerous fossil specimens" that provides an overview of the 3.5 billion-year history of life and its morphological diversity, a demonstration and lighting plan was required that would allow the individual characteristics (color, shape, and texture) of the specimens themselves to be appreciated.

solution

〇 Toyama's Finest Products
concept design minimizes the visibility of fixtures, lighting, and display equipment, while employing high-color-temperature linear lighting to enhance color rendering. By highlighting the variety and appeal of minerals, rocks, and fossils that are often overlooked, we were able to increase interest in the land of Toyama.
Toyama Field Map
The floor map utilizes high-resolution map data based on topographic maps, allowing for the arrangement of necessary elements and making the dynamic terrain more structured and easier to read. For the projection mapping, we shared the final image with the client from the initial projection tests to the actual illumination levels, ensuring a shared understanding throughout the process. This, combined with meticulous on-site lighting shooting, resulted in an exceptionally bright visual surface.
3.5 billion years of the history of life
The display board has been changed from its current wood grain finish to a simple neutral gray, making it easier to recognize the texture and shape of the fossils. Furthermore, the adoption of variable color temperature lighting allows for fine-tuning of the color appearance via remote control after the demonstration is complete. By maximizing the appeal of the fossils, we can evoke thoughts of the environment of long ago.
