overview

Founded in Sweden in 1951, Tetra Pak is a global leading company in food processing and paper container filling and packaging systems.
The Gotemba Technical Center serves as the core base for domestic technical services for Tetra Pak Japan, the Japanese subsidiary of the company. It plays an important role in product support by demonstrating filling and packaging systems, conducting quality control, and analyzing and evaluating paper containers.
The facility is celebrating its 25th anniversary since moving to Gotemba in 1999. To commemorate this occasion, a large-scale renovation project was undertaken to renew the space into one where visitors can experience innovation for new product development and sustainability initiatives through displays and digital tools.

concept design was handled by Pike, the overall project was overseen by Jones Lang LaSalle, and our company participated in this project as the overall construction company for interiors.

To realize concept design that would convey Tetra Pak's high level of technical capability, the entrance lobby that welcomes guests was designed with three core elements in concept design: a sharp shape reminiscent of folded paper, which is the root of the company's business, linear lighting that emphasizes these folds, and pure white, which expresses the pride they take in safety as a company involved with food. The showroom, where actual business negotiations take place, follows the above concepts and also incorporates a woodgrain color scheme that expresses Tetra Pak's approach to sustainability.

Issues/requests

The Gotemba Technical Center plays an important role in helping client companies recognize the value of Tetra Pak, and as the main objective of this project was to fundamentally strengthen this role, it was necessary to come up with a way to surprise and leave a lasting impression on guests who visited the site.

In addition, the following issues were identified on the construction side.
The following issues were also identified: ∙ Investigation of the specifications for custom-made pendant lights for the installation of wall-mounted line lighting and special effects, as well as construction investigation to realize a three-dimensional design.
The project had to be completed within a limited schedule while maintaining the functions of the technical center.

solution

A large triangular pyramid-shaped pendant light emblematic of the Tetra Pak brand is hung in the center of the entrance lobby, which is the first place guests visit, and RGB dimming is also incorporated to create a centripetal space that draws guests into the world of Tetra Pak at once.

construction In the course of the study, we created mock-ups of custom-made pendant lights and verified samples of line lighting, while thoroughly coordinating and examining them among the parties involved, and gave shape to them through trial and error.
In addition, in order to realize the three-dimensional design, we repeatedly coordinated the details with the designer while paying attention to details, such as considering the fit of the existing wall and the new wall.

In promoting the construction, we ensured safety by dividing the area into an employee traffic area and a construction area, while maintaining a system that allowed the technical center to operate during the construction period, and we worked closely with the facility staff while switching and adjusting it on a weekly basis.
In addition, while scheduling a wide range of approval work and procedures in advance, we flexibly responded to events that were discovered after demolition at the site and additional requests from customers, and smoothly proceeded with construction planning and promotion at the same time. In the end, all parties involved worked together to complete the project despite the limited schedule, leading to the reopening of the facility on its 25th anniversary.

Customer's voice

Despite the tight schedule, the project, including the overall construction, was completed as planned. Many customers have visited the facility since the renovation, and we at Tetra Pak have been able to provide even more comprehensive product development support.
