movie
overview
Kaikyokan, located in Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, is an aquarium that boasts a wide variety of pufferfish displays that are characteristic of Shimonoseki, as well as one of the largest penguin displays in Japan. It is also a popular aquarium with a "lifestyle displays" that focuses on the natural habits and behavior of animals.
This is the first major renovation since the museum opened, and it has focused on updating and renovating aging facilities, while also revamping displays. In addition to a fresh concept design that meets the expectations of visitors to the facility, which is widely loved in the Chugoku and Kyushu areas, especially in the local area, the facility has been designed with functionality in mind.
Issues/requests
・Renewing displays in line with the large-scale renovation work to create a sense of novelty and renewal
・The slope escalator that serves as the introduction will be designed to create an exciting atmosphere for visitors, so that they can feel a sense of exhilaration.
・To displays the museum's distinctive pufferfish corner even more attractive
・Sign and graphic planning to resolve the complexities of visitor flow
There were the above challenges.
solution
displays area uses stained-glass style illustrations with a familiar retro feel, while the signs and graphics inside the museum are concept design to be both new and unified.
In addition, the introductory section was designed to create excitement among visitors by enveloping them in images and light, building anticipation for the aquarium and other displays.
Furthermore, the pufferfish corner has displays to showcase the diverse characteristics of pufferfish from every angle, creating one of the best displays spaces in the country.
Regarding signs, we focused on consistency and visibility for each type, and worked to improve the complexity of the flow of visitors. We also aimed to make it easier to change displays by increasing the renewability of various parts, so that we could provide new displays would attract visitors even after the renovation.
In addition, a letter monument using the museum's logo will be created and installed outside, and will function as a photo spot where visitors can take photos with the museum even after the promotions triggered by the renovation have died down, with the intention of encouraging continued promotion by visitors.
