overview

This is a renovation project for the Omiya Center Building, located at the west exit of Omiya Station, one of Japan's leading terminal stations.
We conducted a survey of the area around Omiya Station and identified issues with the building, which was completed over 30 years ago, and carried out a renewal concept design based on the theme of "combining dignity and comfort."
In the renewal process, improving the satisfaction of existing tenants was a key focus, with the aim of increasing the building's presence in terms of functionality and concept design compared to the surrounding buildings.

While retaining the dignity unique to the existing stone, we managed to strike a good balance between the comfort created by light materials, minimizing the disposal of waste materials upon removal. By fusing old and good materials with new materials, we were able to create a cost-effective concept design while being conscious of sustainability.

Issues/requests

As the building has been in operation for over 30 years, it has become outdated in both functionality and concept design compared to the surrounding office buildings. In particular, the challenge was how to change the existing concept design, which had an old-style impression with its lavish use of stone, and how to completely refresh the impersonal impression of the standard floor common areas.

solution

We revamped concept design while making use of existing materials, resulting in increased value.
We also sought to improve tenant satisfaction by replacing the toilets, faucets and other plumbing with the latest functional ones. We carefully selected the colors, materials, signs, plants and light to ensure that all elements were fused together as materials that make up the space, and set all possible elements of the existing interiors, such as the protruding and recessed corners, fitting lines and floor joints, as material switching positions, giving a comfortable rhythm while creating the impression that concept design was there from the time of completion, avoiding the added-on feel that is common in renovation concept design.
