Hamamatsu Science Museum Miraira

The science museum has been renovated due to the aging of the facilities and displays items of the existing science museum. We obtained a proposal using the DBO * method, which integrates design, construction, and operation, and completed the construction in a short period of about one and a half years from schematic design.
With the main purpose of providing active learning-type learning, we plan displays experience stories as a basic policy that leads to in-depth learning through voluntary actions by arousing interest from experiences.

The displays space, which is zoned with six themes consisting of nature, power, sound, light, space, and new technology, has almost all more than 100 new science experience equipment, centered on a large centerpiece displays that symbolizes each zone that can be participated by a large number of people.
With the cooperation of companies representing Hamamatsu, displays were deployed throughout the museum to arouse interest in local industries. In addition, the science museum has introduced the world's first scientific information learning system (app) equipped with AI (artificial intelligence) to realize a new way of communication concept design that expands interest and knowledge through dialogue.

In addition to the displays room, the entrance welcome displays by local artist Yasuhiro Suzuki, a children's science land, cafes, shops, and an outdoor science park have also been renovated to incorporate elements of a science museum and make it a comfortable place for not only children but concept design also adults.

*DBO (Design, Build, Operate): A method of public-private partnership in which design, construction, maintenance, and operation are comprehensively ordered to private companies.

We were required to design construction a complete renewal of the Science Museum in a short period of about 17 months. After the opening, the museum will be managed and operated for 10 years as a designated administrator, so the design work had to be carried out in tandem with the operation plan.
displays In addition to the renewal, we also had to consider a wide range of other tasks simultaneously, such as landscaping the adjacent science park, creating outdoor playground equipment, and developing an interpretation system using the latest AI technology, all while working to achieve consistency in each area.

To complete the design in a short period of time, we formed four displays design teams, one for each field, and carried out the design work simultaneously. In addition, we ensured consistency between displays design and the operational plan by having prospective operational staff participate from the design stage.
For highly specialized areas outside of displays, such as park design and AI commentary systems, we collaborated with external companies and leveraged their expertise to carry out our work. displays involving local businesses were promoted with the cooperation of our Chubu branch and local advertising agencies.
