Mitsubishi Estate and NOMURA begin demonstration experiment on "Relaxing effects of interiors spaces using solid wood, etc."

Mitsubishi Estate Co., Ltd. and NOMURA Co., Ltd. have jointly submitted a project for the "2022 Project to Demonstrate the Effectiveness of Using Wood in Interior and Exterior Buildings" (subsidized by the Forestry Agency, and solicited by Wood Structure Progress Co., Ltd. and the Japan Housing and Wood Technology Center, a public interest incorporated association), with the theme "The relaxing effect of interiors spaces using solid wood and other materials" being selected, and a demonstration experiment has now begun.

Recently, with the spread of hybrid work, including teleworking and working in the office, there is a growing need for a comfortable and well-being office space that is not just a place to work, but also a place for communication. In this demonstration experiment, we will scientifically demonstrate the effects of solid wood and other materials on people using an office interiors space as a model, and aim to increase the opportunities and amount of domestic wood used in the non-residential market by finding new added value from solid wood and other materials. This time, we will focus on the effects on sound, and first measure the sound absorption and reverberation due to differences in material (solid wood/non-wood) and thickness, and then discover new value by measuring the physiological responses of users in two experimental booths using materials with the largest differences. Academic guidance will be provided by Professor Yuko Tsunetsugu of the Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences at the University of Tokyo, audible and inaudible sound surveys will be conducted by Associate Professor Mari Ueda of the Faculty of Information Science at Kanagawa Institute of Technology, and relaxation effect measurement surveys will be conducted with the cooperation of WIN Frontier Co., Ltd., and the demonstration will continue from February 2023 onwards.

 

■ Wood Co_Lab (wood collaboration)

Mitsubishi Estate Co., Ltd. and NOMURA Co., Ltd. are leading the way in scientifically examining the "what's good about wood?" in order to improve the appeal and value of wood. With "the five human senses" as the keyword, they will conduct various experiments with the aim of backing up their findings with numbers and data. A project adopted as a subsidized project by the Forestry Agency will also be carried out as one of Wood Collaboration's research themes.
