Mitsubishi Estate and NOMURA Co.,Ltd. begin demonstration experiment on "Relaxation effects of interiors spaces using solid wood"
Mitsubishi Estate Co., Ltd. and NOMURA Co.,Ltd. Ltd. have jointly submitted a proposal for the "2022 Project to Demonstrate the Effectiveness of Wood-Based Interior and Exterior Construction" (a project subsidized by the Forestry Agency and organized by Wood Structure Progress Co., Ltd. and the Japan Housing and Wood Technology Center, a public interest incorporated association), with the theme "The Relaxing Effects of interiors Spaces Using Solid Wood and Other Materials," which was selected, and a demonstration experiment has begun.
With the recent spread of hybrid work, combining telework and in-office work, there is a growing need for comfortable, well-being office spaces that are not just workplaces but also serve as spaces for communication. This demonstration experiment uses an office interiors space as a model to scientifically verify the effects of solid wood and other materials on people and discover new added value, thereby increasing opportunities and the amount of domestic timber used in the non-residential market. This experiment focuses on the effects on sound. First, we measured the sound absorption and reverberation characteristics of different materials (solid wood vs. non-wood) and thicknesses. Next, we measured the physiological responses of users in two experimental booths using materials with the greatest differences between these two, thereby uncovering new value. Academic supervision will be provided by Professor Yuko Tsunetsugu of the Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences at the University of Tokyo. Audible and inaudible sound surveys will be conducted by Associate Professor Mari Ueda of the Faculty of Informatics at Kanagawa Institute of Technology. The relaxation effect measurement survey will be conducted with the cooperation of WIN Frontier Co., Ltd. The demonstration experiment is scheduled to continue beyond February 2023.
■ Wood Co_Lab (wood collaboration)
Mitsubishi Estate Co., Ltd. and NOMURA Co.,Ltd. Ltd. are leading the way in scientifically examining the "what's good about wood?" in order to enhance the appeal and value of wood. Using the keyword "human five senses," they will conduct various experiments with the aim of backing up their findings with numbers and data. A project selected for subsidy by the Forestry Agency will also be carried out as one of Wood Collaboration's research themes.
