The Varve Museum is the world's first museum that explores a single theme: varves. Varves are stripes of mud that accumulate on the bottom of a lake over a long period of time. The varves of Lake Suigetsu, one of the scenic Mikata Five Lakes (Fukui Prefecture), have been recorded over an enormous period of time - 70,000 years - making them the longest in the world. They have accumulated to a depth of 45m and are recognized worldwide as the global standard for dating. Facing the lake, 100 thin slices of "shining soil = varves" are on displays, and have become a symbol of the region that goes beyond the scope of a museum.
The landscape here is also one of displays. You can feel the change of time, and as the sun goes down, displays change appearance along with the scenery. There is no boundary between displays, architecture, and landscape, creating a harmonious worldview.
[Customer feedback]
"Varves" is a difficult theme as it is not commonly known, but after much discussion and consideration in order to create displays that would satisfy visitors, the museum has created displays that is both academic and easy to understand, and it has received high praise in visitor surveys.
