overview

The Urbannet Midosuji Building is a newly constructed 100m-tall building located along Midosuji, Osaka's main street. It is a complex building primarily used for offices, with entertainment facilities located on the lower floors.
We considered it not as a standalone building, but as part of "urban development," and were conscious of creating a space that is integrated with the town and encourages interaction and activity by gently connecting the roadside and the indoor space. Furthermore, by providing office space that caters to new ways of working, we aimed to continue supporting the various activities of a diverse range of people and contribute to the future revitalization of Midosuji and the town.

Issues/requests

As "Midosuji's next-generation workplace that creates meaning in coming to the office," the project aims to enhance the common areas with the aim of improving worker well-being and productivity. It also aims to create a new hub by utilizing indoor and outdoor spaces to generate interaction not only among employees of the tenant companies but also as a "building open to the town."
In addition to creating concept design and mechanisms that would assist the diverse activities of these people and the town, with a view to the future "pedestrianization of Midosuji," the challenge was to express throughout the entire space the nature and location unique to urban spaces, as well as the historical and cultural background that will be passed down to the past, present, and future.

solution

concept design was based on the theme of "Midosuji x WELL-being," with the aim of creating a building that would serve as a "driving force" that supports the growth of workers, tenant companies, and the town.

On the first floor, which connects to the town, we took inspiration from the neon lights that symbolize the Osaka era when Midosuji was established, and concept design three-dimensional pendant lighting that mimics the "streets and lines" of Midosuji, which spreads out in a grid pattern, with the aim of creating a new symbol of the building and the town.
At the base, we placed neon art that is integrated with seating, making it like street furniture and adding to the enjoyment of walking around town, and serving as an element that draws people into the building.

Additionally, from the perspective of well-being, natural elements are the theme of the key floors.

・2nd floor office lobby
The theme is "water." The signage combines the artistic image of a water column that changes over time with functional information displays, creating cutting-edge art that harmonizes the city and nature, creating movement and rhythm in the static space and in people's emotions.

・Tenant lounge on the 11th floor
The theme was "greenery," and a bright and open lounge was created by taking in natural light and greenery from the three sides facing the city, while continuing the lush greenery into the interior. Intermediate areas were created with fixtures filled with greenery to gently connect the zones, allowing workers to choose how to use the space depending on the occasion or mood. Furthermore, the framework of the lounge is formed by wooden-patterned louvers on the ceiling that mimic the "streets and lines" of Midosuji, and the inheritance of the urban context is also embodied in concept design.

・Rooftop terrace
The theme is "earth." Made up of stone cages of different sizes and heights, surrounded by earth and greenery, we created a place where everyone can spend their time as they wish.

・Stairs on each key floor
Paint art is used to express diversity by changing each floor. It is an attempt to simultaneously realize a "WELL of the mind" that generates positive feelings through new realizations, and a "WELL of the body" that contributes to health promotion.

Throughout the building, we have used concept design and art that evokes the urban context and nature, stimulating people's sensibilities and imagination and encouraging positive feelings and activity, creating a space that we hope will provide a new "driving force" for sustainable growth.
