Kojima Children's Science Park (Tochigi Prefectural Children's Science Museum)
overview
The Tochigi Children's Science Museum, having been in operation for over 35 years since its opening in 1988, underwent renovations to address the aging of its buildings and displays. This included extending the lifespan of the building and updating planetarium equipment and displays. Our company handled the entire process, from schematic design and working drawings of the large-scale renovation, including displays, interiors, and outdoor playground equipment, to the construction displays Based on an interactive approach, 156 displays and playground equipment incorporating new technologies such as AI and AR were created through a combination of newly manufactured and reused items. displays that have been beloved by the people of Tochigi for many years were also cleaned and refurbished for continued use. Furthermore, collaborative displays themed on the prefecture's natural environment and industries, a large symbolic displays, and a lounge were added, highlighting the museum's unique character as a science museum that reflects Tochigi's identity. This also aimed to reduce renovation costs, improve maintenance efficiency, and create a new science experience space that balances safety and functionality.
Issues/requests
In recent years, the social and economic environment has been changing dramatically, and in order to serve as a place where children who will lead the next generation can learn and be active while having fun acquiring scientific knowledge and experiences,
①The facility must reflect the latest scientific technology and be attractive enough to stimulate children's curiosity.
② As a manufacturing prefecture, it allows people to experience the technologies of companies and other organizations within the prefecture.
3) The facility must be accessible to everyone, especially children, without any barriers and in a safe manner.
4) It will lead to cost reductions, including maintenance costs.
More than that was required.
solution
〇 Setting themes that are relevant to the times
In addition to the existing "Space, Earth, Life, and Basics (Principles and Fundamentals)" zones, we have added new "Lifestyle" and "Environment" zones as themes necessary for living in the future society. These zones feature exhibits that meet contemporary displays, such as "Science of Life," which deals with science related to daily life, including AI, communication technology, and games, and "Science of the Environment," which addresses environmental issues such as carbon neutrality and waste problems.
A science museum that also incorporates an inclusive perspective.
During the design phase, we conducted workshops with stakeholders to identify challenges while gaining new insights. We then planned the layout and displays methods to accommodate diverse users. By incorporating furniture designed with wheelchair users in mind and including inclusive play equipment outdoors, we have created a science museum that can be enjoyed by a wide range of visitors.
〇 Numerous corporate collaborations and joint displays showcase the unique character of Tochigi.
As a science museum in Tochigi Prefecture, known for its manufacturing industry and its proximity to the Tokyo metropolitan area, we have incorporated collaborative displays with local companies throughout the museum. By introducing companies and industries in a wide range of fields, including automobiles, food, machine parts, and medical equipment, we aim to foster pride among the people of Tochigi Prefecture and highlight the unique character of the science museum, allowing visitors to feel the essence of Tochigi.
