overview

THE HOTEL HIGASHIYAMA is located in Higashiyama, Kyoto, where many cultural and artistic facilities are gathered and where you can feel a variety of cultures. It is a hotel where you can feel the beauty of nature in various ways, and the purpose of your stay is to stay.

Guests are greeted through the entrance by a tranquil plaster-style lobby, which displays original artworks that can only be found at this hotel. These artworks, unique to the hotel, allow guests to experience culture and build anticipation for their stay.
The original program "Kyoto Iroha" will allow you to experience the unique aesthetic sense of Kyoto and enhance the charm of your stay, and you can enjoy and experience the culture that has long lived in Kyoto and Japan, approaching it from five different angles according to the five senses. You can learn and enjoy Kyoto culture from the "Iroha" through a menu of experiences that can only be experienced here, by actually seeing, smelling, tasting, touching, hearing and moving your hands.
Located in Higashiyama, where you can enjoy the refined sensibilities, this hotel offers a "deepening" journey as a gateway to the heart of Kyoto.

Issues/requests

From the beginning, our main target was inbound demand, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we were forced to make a major change in the plan from the middle stage of the project.

We were asked to create a lodging space that would allow us to approach a greater number of targets, mainly Japanese people, and that would serve as a base for experiencing the culture of Kyoto, starting with the neighboring Okazaki district.

solution

In addition to the spatial concept design, we proposed a unique approach to the hotel, created through new relationships with traditional craftsmen, for the tea sets, guest room amenities and artwork that are directly linked to the guest experience.

We created tea boxes, DD card signs, and scented tops using bamboo crafts, and also coordinated with a textile artist and a Kyoto Nishijin textile craftsman to realize an expression using woven fabrics made of non-flammable fiberglass. We also created concept design that many customers can enjoy by providing public spaces such as a counter for enjoying tea, a private spa function, and a restaurant that can be used for various purposes.
