Technos College Tokyo Institute of Technology Game Creator Department Classroom Renewal
This was a renovation project for the Game Creator Department's training room at Technos College Tokyo Technical College (Koganei City, Tokyo). We were in charge of everything from concept design environmental features and interiors construction.
It started with the initial request to create a classroom where students could imagine themselves working at a game company five years from now, and as we continued to talk to teachers, we realized that at the root of it all was the desire for students to "imagine their own future without being tied to the game industry."
We therefore proposed a concept design concept called "Game Creator's labo" so that students could imagine their futures as creators, without being limited to the field of games.
Students were asked to become aware of how the field of game creation is related to society so that they could imagine their "post-graduation vision*," which is the core of Technos College's learning.
At the same time, it was also important to create a sense of immersion that would allow the Game Creator students to express their creativity and become engrossed in their learning.
*"Post-Graduation Vision"...The core concept of Technos College's learning. Explore the "changes" and "future" of society and the industry you are aiming for, imagine situations and work styles in which you can express your individuality, and plan the learning and experiences necessary to achieve that. (From Technos College's website)
We have created a classroom that encourages idea generation and provides opportunities to encounter other fields in building a career as a creator.
The classroom concept design is a fusion of retro modern and game culture, and while it is a highly sensitive concept design, it is sprinkled with icons, colors, and sign concept design that evoke game culture in key places, creating a space that stimulates the creativity of the students.
The zoning is divided into three areas: "Study," where students can learn while experiencing both old and new game culture, from analog board games to the latest VR; "Create," which is the core of classes, where students work in groups, attend lectures, and do other tasks; and "Communication," a place where students can deepen their interactions with each other and with students from other departments.
In particular, the "Communication" area was located in the hallway in front of the classrooms, which was not included in the original givens. However, we proposed creating a comfortable base for students to stay in a corridor where students from other departments come and go, and stimulating interaction, as we believed this would be important for the students to develop their careers as creators, and this was realized with the client's approval.
We also named this area "GAME LABO" to make it more familiar to the students.
With this renovation project as a starting point, we hope to create a space that will inspire students to think about their futures through interactions across departments.
