overview

The first store under this new concept, "Sports Authority Toyokawa," aims to be more than just a sports goods store; it's a place where anyone can casually drop by and feel like they belong.
Instead of creating a typical sports store atmosphere, we prioritize creating a welcoming, friendly, and relaxing environment that is accessible to everyone. Using a "veranda" as a symbolic concept design, we connect the "inside" and "outside" of the store, providing a space where a wide range of customers, from families to seniors, can relax and enjoy shopping and communication.

Issues/requests

Nearly 30 years have passed since Sports Authority opened stores in Japan, and it was necessary to change the layout and concept design of the store.
Furthermore, because many of their stores are located in shopping malls, the customer base changes depending on whether it's a weekday or weekend, and the time of day. In addition, with the increasing demand for light sports due to health consciousness, they wanted to create stores that could attract a wider range of customers.
Meanwhile, we were also simultaneously working on refining our logistics and reforming our store operations, and there was a need for store designs that could accommodate new business formats.

solution

We saw the store's location in a shopping mall as a strength, and instead of trying to make it more of a sporting goods store, we aimed to create a place that is open to everyone and emphasizes communication.
By installing symbolic benches on the facade with a veranda motif, we open it up as a public space for resting and socializing, giving the impression that it is a place where anyone can easily stop by.

Furthermore, verandas have been placed throughout the spacious store, allowing them to be used as resting areas, places for communication, and as display spaces.
We prioritize inviting and comfortable concept design elements, incorporating signage that reflects the unique characteristics of each region, and striving to express a distinctiveness that sets us apart from other sports stores.
By carefully reviewing the backroom and traffic flow, and by reducing the height of fixtures and adjusting the amount of items on display, the store has been transformed into one where staff can keep a close eye on everything and customers can easily browse.
