The first new concept store, Sports Authority Toyokawa, aims to be more than just a sporting goods store; it also aims to be a space that anyone can drop in to.
We have deliberately avoided creating a typical sports store, and have placed importance on creating an atmosphere that is friendly, approachable, and relaxing, open to everyone. We have concept design a "veranda" (engawa) as a symbolic motif to connect the "inside" and "outside" of the store, providing a space where a wide range of customers, from families to seniors, can relax and enjoy shopping and communication.
Nearly 30 years have passed since Sports Authority opened stores in Japan, and changes were needed to the layout and concept design of the sales floor.
Additionally, because many of our stores are located in shopping malls, the customer base changes depending on whether it's a weekday or a holiday, and the time of day. In addition, with demand for light sports activities increasing due to a health-conscious consumer trend, we received a request to open a store that can attract a wider range of customers.
At the same time, the company was also examining its logistics and reforming sales floor operations, and was seeking a store design that could accommodate the new business model.
We saw the store's location in a shopping mall as a strength, and instead of trying to make it more of a sporting goods store, we aimed to create a place that is open to everyone and emphasizes communication.
By installing symbolic benches on the facade with a veranda motif, we open it up as a public space for resting and socializing, giving the impression that it is a place where anyone can easily stop by.
Additionally, there are verandas in various places throughout the spacious store that can be used as a base for resting, communication and displaying items.
concept design style also places emphasis on making each store easy to enter and comfortable, and we incorporate signs that take advantage of the characteristics of each region, expressing a unique style that is not found in other sports stores.
The back-of-store and traffic flow were also carefully examined, and by reducing the height of fixtures and adjusting the amount of display, the store was transformed into one where staff can keep a close eye on things and customers can easily move around.
