overview
The Shizuoka City Museum of History is Shizuoka City's first comprehensive history museum, with the theme of "Learning about Shizuoka's past, understanding its present, and thinking about its future." Its purpose is to disseminate the historical value and appeal of Shizuoka City, to convey history more deeply to citizens, and to nurture children's love for their hometown. Our company was involved from the basic planning stage and was in charge of displays design and construction of the first-floor gallery and the permanent displays rooms on the second and third floors.
Issues/requests
As a core base for the ``City of History and Culture'' set forth in the 3rd Shizuoka City Comprehensive Plan, we would like to create a museum that conveys the charm of Shizuoka City's history and culture, centered around two military commanders, Tokugawa Ieyasu and Imagawa Yoshimoto. . At the same time, there was a request to create a facility that would contribute to the revitalization of the local economy through tourism exchange and other activities.
solution
From the perspective of promoting tourism, we conducted interviews with a wide range of citizens, including local chambers of commerce, regional NPOs, and local history research groups, at the beginning of the project and incorporated their feedback into the plan. Furthermore, during the design phase, we focused on creating a seamless displays design that conveys "the present and the future" while aligning with the architectural design and emphasizing history. Specifically, this included large-scale video presentations using life-size, ultra-high-resolution photography that speaks to visitors from their perspective, transparent display cases that highlight the exhibits in line with the museum's policy of "displays and managing displays using borrowed items such as national treasures and important cultural properties," and the creation of a city model from the 1950s using photographs and maps collected from citizens.
Customer's voice
We have received comments such as the following from visitors.
・When I learned that Sunpu was very prosperous during the Imagawa, Ieyasu, and early Meiji periods, I became proud of it as a citizen.
・There were more sights to see than I had imagined. I learned about Shizuoka's past and felt the message that it is connected to the present. It gave me something to talk about with my son, an elementary school student, who was visiting the museum with me, and it made me feel proud as a person living in Shizuoka.
