The predecessor of this main building was the Bicycle Museum Cycle Center, which opened in Daisen Park, also in Sakai City, in April 1992. It was then relocated and renamed to its new location in front of the station in March 2022, and was reborn as a new, larger facility.
The concept of the museum is "Anyone who comes here will want to ride a bicycle," and by making full use of the entire displays space, we aim to convey the appeal of bicycles from a variety of perspectives, helping visitors discover the "true value of bicycles" and creating a "feeling of wanting to ride a bicycle."
We also focused particularly on creating a space that would encourage people to change their attitudes by rediscovering the value of something so familiar as a bicycle.
In order to reduce climate change and its impacts worldwide, society is required to curb the use of fossil fuels and switch to clean means of transportation. In addition, the transition to an aging society requires the realization of healthier and more comfortable lives for all people. In response to the movement toward a sustainable society where people can live happily, the previous museum, which was built about 30 years ago, had limitations in its history-based displays content and space, and was unable to fully convey the appeal of bicycles, which are evolving every day, and the social issues they can solve. Therefore, the new museum wanted to further deepen communication by conveying to more people than ever before the depth of the historical culture of bicycles themselves, which are not well known in Japan, and the appeal and value of bicycles with an eye to the future.
displays was planned from three perspectives: "Bicycles with rich historical culture and precise technology," "Bicycles as tools useful for health, environmental conservation, and sustainability," and "Bicycles as partners in creating lifestyles." The policy for displays space to convey these perspectives was to thoroughly present bicycle-related "museum" in the way that it would be in a museum, and design, layout a simple, noiseless, and unified space in which displays would stand out.
In addition, information is provided in an optimal way, using video and digital commentary systems, without revealing too much information about natural history such as text and images. The highlight of displays is the panoramic theater, which uses six large screens and displays vehicles to create a complex presentation of the dawn of the history of the bicycle, allowing visitors to dynamically relive the inventors who challenged "freedom of movement," the birth of the bicycle, and its technological evolution.
Furthermore, by displays a message for the realization of a sustainable society for the future from a different perspective and in a fun way, displays is designed to encourage empathy and understanding among a diverse range of visitors and encourage them to put the ideas into practice as if they were "personal."
As the only museum in Japan specializing in bicycles, we aim to be a "growing museum" by developing displays and digital archives that can educate and inspire general visitors, enthusiasts, and experts alike, through the vast collection of bicycle-related items and information collected from around the world.
