overview
The Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Museum Funeshiru, which opened at Osaka Nanko ATC, where the Sunflower ferry connecting Osaka and Kyushu is docked, is the first museum created by the company, a leader in the shipping industry with a history of over 140 years, with the desire to allow many people to "experience the world of ships that support people's daily lives."
Based on the concept of a museum where visitors can "see," "touch," and "play" with the ships that support our lives, we aimed to create a facility where people of all ages, from children to adults, can have fun while learning that "maritime transport supports people's daily lives" and "ships are evolving every day."
We have created a space and experiences that are friendly and exciting for children, such as a large panoramic theater where you can experience the scale of ships and the sea, and interactive displays that allow you to enjoy learning about jobs related to ships and shipping.Inspired by the image of a port where "food transported across the sea" is gathered, we have also set up a cafe where you can enjoy original curry and a shop selling original goods that can only be found at a museum about ships and shipping.
Issues/requests
- The shipping industry is an essential job in Japan, but there are limited opportunities to learn about it in school and in society, so I would like many Japanese people to feel closer to the shipping industry.
-We want to create a place that will serve as a touch point for ships and the shipping industry.
・By raising awareness of the industry, we hope to use the facility as a PR facility with an eye toward future career education, and to stimulate interest in "ships," "life in shipping," and "jobs related to ships" among preschoolers through elementary school students.
-We also want to attract more visitors to the ferry cruises operated by the Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Group.
This was the request.
solution
In Japan, which is surrounded by the sea, more than 99% of imports and exports are transported by ships, which are not usually seen.
The facility aims to be a museum where visitors can "learn" about MOL Group ships, "learn" about shipping using ships as a starting point, "learn" about the jobs involved in shipping, and "learn" about the appeal of these. It was concept design to allow children, who will be the future leaders of the shipping industry, to feel closer to ships and shipping through hands-on experiences.
The museum is structured around an area that allows visitors to become immersed in the world of shipping, with interactive displays and content based on themes, displays the power of ships operating on the vast oceans of the world and the present and future of shipping, which supports our daily lives.
In addition, to expand the museum experience, the team worked together to create experiences and spaces, utilizing our comprehensive capabilities. These included offering original cafe menus, attractive goods that allow visitors to take home learnings, proposing experiences linked to the Sunflower, which is docked at ATC, and training staff to deepen communication with visitors.
Customer's voice
displays hall has no partitions, creating an open space, and concept design, which represents the scale of the shipping industry and the vast, blue ocean, has been well received by visitors. The cafe and shop at the entrance (free admission) also make it easy for passersby to stop by, creating a lively space.
