Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Shinmachi Annex Renovation
overview
Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Shinmachi Annex was developed in 2014 on Shinmachi Street, a street that retains a strong sense of Kyoto's character, on the site of the former Matsuzakaya Kyoto purchasing office, based on the concept of "tradition, inheritance, and regeneration." Architectural materials and storehouses from the former Matsuzakaya Kyoto purchasing office have been passed down to the current hotel as part of the history and culture of the area.
In this renovation, while inheriting the original concept from when the hotel opened, we have carried out renovations mainly in the guest rooms, lobby, and back-of-house areas to respond to diversifying accommodation needs and changes in hotel operations. We have created a space that enhances the comfort of the hotel while carefully preserving its historical background.
Issues/requests
Twelve years had passed since its opening, and in addition to addressing the effects of aging, the hotel faced the challenge of reviewing guest room functions and common areas to accommodate the changing accommodation styles of both domestic and international guests. The renovation aimed to create a more comfortable hotel environment for both guests and hotel staff by balancing functionality and aesthetics while preserving the historical architecture and space.
solution
Based on the initial concept, we proceeded by identifying which parts needed to be preserved for their historical value and which parts needed to be updated.
In some guest rooms, renovations were carried out to rethink the use of space while preserving the existing design, accommodating the needs of larger groups and international guests. The interior of the guest rooms incorporates traditional Japanese elements characteristic of Kyoto, such as lattice designs, natural materials, art using Yuzen dyeing, and obi fabrics, creating a soft and inviting space. A new corner has been added in the lobby showcasing the history of the former Matsuzakaya Kyoto purchasing store, creating a space where guests can feel the history and culture of the area, and the sofa layout has been changed to allow guests to feel more comfortable in the Japanese garden. In addition, back-of-house areas such as offices and break rooms for staff who support hotel operations have been renovated to create a more comfortable working environment.
