overview

GORA KADAN Kadan FUJI, which faces the peak of Mount Fuji due west and offers panoramic views of the mountain from all 42 guest rooms and public areas, is the first accommodation facility opened by the historic Hakone inn GORA KADAN.

We were responsible for design, layout of the common areas such as the lobby lounge, dining, bar, spa and shops in the reception building, as well as the FFE (furniture, fixtures and equipment) concept design for all areas, including the guest rooms.

Issues/requests

Our mission was to inherit the genes of the long-established GORA KADAN Kadan Hakone, while also creating new functionality and hospitality in the interior space that is in keeping with the characteristics of this location, which has the majestic and overwhelming view of Mount Fuji, and the times.
This facility is visited by a variety of guests from Japan and abroad, and the interior space needed to be "hospitality" for guests, including those staying for long periods of time.

solution

The dining floor required a spatial configuration that would allow various businesses to coexist and still maintain privacy while entertaining guests. Located in a location where you can gaze upon Mt. Fuji from the large opening on the floor, we have placed a waiting bar, teppanyaki counter seats, kaiseki table seats, and private rooms, and concept design and installed modern partitions made from woven local bamboo to create a calming atmosphere within each area, even while still allowing a view of each other. This is an evolution of traditional Japanese architectural techniques that do not separate spaces with walls.
Taking advantage of the daytime scenery, the area gradually dims its lights in the evening, revealing Mount Fuji bathed in the setting sun, and after sunset it transforms into a completely different, private space with deep shadows.

Additionally, at the back of the kitchen is a partitioned Kappo counter room, and at the end of the alley is a sushi restaurant (Sushi Takumi) positioned as a detached building with its own small garden, creating a space that guests will never tire of.
Additionally, we have deliberately included a relaxing secret bar where guests can enjoy a drink while looking out at the primeval forest, which is the complete opposite of Mount Fuji, in order to add depth to the experience of guests staying there.

Furthermore, a spa was located in part of the long corridor leading to the large public bath on the lower floor. The pre-treatment area, which is made to blend in with the exterior waterscape, features a water basin carved out of a local rock as a symbol of the concept of "Fuji spring water." The sound of the water and reflected light create a deep sense of freedom as one is embraced by nature. Furthermore, we have created a menu and space to relax guests, including treatments in private rooms, private baths with views of the waterscape, and head spas.

GORA KADAN Hakone has a "refined culture of reminiscence" that is not limited to traditional Japanese architecture. This project also carries on this philosophy in many places.
