FUJI Nagoya Science Museum FUJI Railway Plaza
overview
This project involves the repair and restoration of the world's only surviving German-made B6 steam locomotive, housed at the FUJI Nagoya Science Museum, and the development of a "Railway Plaza" where three railway vehicles, including an old-style passenger car, will be displays outdoors. Aiming to create a place where visitors can experience the dynamic power of a 1904-manufactured steam locomotive in operation and learn about the principles of science and technology and the history of manufacturing, this project spanned over 10 years, with our company handling everything from the locomotive's restoration survey to the conceptual planning, design, and construction. In addition to the repair, restoration, and long-distance transportation of the vehicles, we also incorporated design administration for the outdoor displays facilities and presentation techniques that link to the dynamic displays of the B6 locomotive using transparent LED panels.
Issues/requests
There was a demand to make the "Type B6 steam locomotive," which had been on static displays, into a dynamic displays.
solution
Through vehicle disassembly and driving surveys, repair and restoration design, and long-distance vehicle transportation planning, we established displays plan that was feasible within the designated area.
Following an inspection of the B6 type vehicles, the vehicles were modified and restored to use a compressed air power mechanism.
Furthermore, the concept design incorporates architectural concept design reminiscent of European train stations, the birthplace of the B6 locomotive, and a platform-style displays layout, creating a lively and immersive space where architecture and displays are seamlessly integrated.
Furthermore, in addition to analog dynamic effects such as moving wheels, sounding whistles, and emitting smoke, we also implemented a fusion of analog and digital effects, overlaying video commentary that interprets the appeal of the dynamic displays from a scientific and cultural perspective onto the vehicle using transparent LEDs.
Customer's voice
The "Type B6 steam locomotive" was on static outdoor displays, but we requested that it be put to good use and displays in a dynamic manner. As the science museum is located in an urban area, we opted for a dynamic displays using compressed air rather than a reproduction of a coal-fired steam engine.
We have received many positive comments from our customers, such as, "The movement of the real steam locomotive is impressive and cool," "The LED display clearly explains how a steam engine works," and "The steam on the display matches the movement of the driving wheels, creating a great atmosphere."
