Akikusa Gakuen Junior College Earthquake Renovation Project
overview
Initially, Akikusa Gakuen contacted us to discuss seismic retrofitting work for their gymnasium.
With the earthquake-resistant construction and the renovation of the gymnasium's facade and interiors, there was a request to transform the passageway connecting the school building and the gymnasium from a "damp and dark atmosphere to a bright and clean passageway. We also wanted to create a space that the school could leave for future generations." As a result, we were tasked with concept design a passageway space that expresses the identity of Akikusa Gakuen.
The most important aspect of this project was creating a space that people would continue to cherish. Therefore, we started by creating concept design 's foundation through workshops with students, and then focused on concept design the process to foster affection and ensure its continuation.
We asked the students to bring in photographs that express the essence of "Akikusa," and then extracted the feelings behind them from their responses, which were then put into words using the hashtag "#〇〇." These feelings were then transformed into concept design and incorporated into the hallway.
We encouraged students to internalize concept design as something personal to them and spread it to those around them, so that the "Akikusa style" would be passed down through generations and people would continue to interact with the space with affection.
Issues/requests
We received the following requests: a complete concept design of the gymnasium in conjunction with seismic retrofitting, and the creation of a space that will last for future generations.
solution
We held workshops to extract what makes Akikusa unique—its strengths and brand image—from the students, and created concept design that will be passed down to future generations.
Customer's voice
I am extremely grateful for the courteous support I received from the planning stage through construction and to completion.
We feel that this project was extremely meaningful for our university, as it allowed students to reconsider what makes Akikusa unique and to be involved in the process of bringing that vision to life, and also provided support from the alumni association for the sake of our alma mater.
I was pleased to see so many students cheering when they saw the completed walkway, and I will use this feedback for future publicity.
