Standardization of carbon calculators in the event industry | Development begins with 12 member companies of the Japan Association of Events Industry (JACE)

Industry-wide decarbonization action
NOMURA, together with 11 member companies of the Japan Event Industry Promotion Association, has begun developing an industry standard carbon calculator for event activity processes.
Companies are already beginning to voluntarily adopt the Sustainability Disclosure Standards published by the Sustainability Standards Board of Japan (SSBJ) on March 5, 2025. In response to this movement, the event industry has also begun to actively engage in carbon calculators, but there are cases where the measured values for the same event vary greatly due to differences in the materials used for measurement and the measurement range, making goal setting unclear.
To solve these problems, volunteers from the Japan Event Industry Promotion Association came together to develop a highly transparent carbon calculator that would give the same calculation results regardless of which company measures it. We believe that co-creation actions that bring together companies in the event industry will increase the value and appeal of events more than ever before, and contribute to the sustainable development of the industry.
[Aim of developing the Carbon Calculator]
Conventional carbon calculators often use a calculation method that converts materials into monetary terms. However, in order to achieve more accurate calculations and to make it easier to consider reduction plans after calculations, we thought that a carbon calculator that uses calculation methods that are less likely to vary depending on the person making the measurement, such as weight conversion, would be optimal. Based on this idea, we decided to develop a new carbon calculator based on the carbon measurement online platform "SUSTAINABLE ENGINE CARBON SIMULATOR"* developed by Hakuhodo Products Inc. We will continue to develop the calculator with the goal of releasing a demo version within fiscal year 2025 so that it can be used by anyone involved in the event industry as a tool that meets sustainability disclosure standards.
* SUSTAINABLE ENGINE CARBON SIMULATOR
An online carbon measurement platform provided by SUSTAINABLE ENGINE, a project team of Hakuhodo Product's Inc., that can precisely measure and visualize CO2 emissions in the event sector. It calculates in detail the CO2 emissions and recycling rates from the production process to disposal of an event, supporting the planning of environmentally friendly events.
