R&D project "material record" with the theme of "material = earth resources" | First product "noon by material record" announced

A new project that will play a part in NOMURA 's sustainable concept design initiative
NOMURA Co., Ltd. (Minato-ku, Tokyo) has launched "material record," a project themed on "material = earth's resources," as part of an R&D project that will begin in 2022. The first product will be released on Friday, December 13, 2024. Sound equipment "noon by material record" (hereinafter "noon") This product, which combines "sound" and "materials" by focusing on the various sustainable materials that make up the earth, is an experiential art piece that embodies the creativity of the NOMURA Group, which specializes in spatial design.
Material Record is an R&D project led by NOMURA Group that focuses on the theme of materials = global resources. In the construction and interiors industries, which consume large amounts of resources, the project is conducting various sustainable research and development projects centered on materials. The first product, "noon by material record" (hereafter "noon"), is a speaker made from sustainable materials such as construction waste, plastic pieces washed up on the shore, denim scraps, and retired fuel tanks from rocket development, and is a challenge to create new values for materials through acoustic experiences.
The first product to be announced for this project features a pillar design reminiscent of an architectural structure, and is made up of a total of nine different materials, including six speakers with different frequency bands and a vacuum tube amplifier. The sound emitted from the case, which contains its own story and memory, reflects the characteristics of the material, creating an opportunity to look at the scenery and resources beyond the material.

Sustainable concept design promoted by NOMURA Group
NOMURA Group's R&D activities are carried out in four areas: "Environment," "Culture," "Local Communities," and "People." We aim to create new value by balancing business with solving social issues from various angles, such as preserving the local environment, space creation, coexisting with art, and revitalizing local communities.
Because interiors building materials have a significant impact on the environment, NOMURA Group will continue to focus on sustainable materials and promote their use. In order to bring joy, excitement and happiness to people and society, we will continue to contribute to solving social issues through creative ideas and challenging technological development. The newly announced "noon" can also replace the material that makes up the speaker housing with other materials, and we can expect future developments, such as developing new materials using unused resources and waste materials from local areas and companies.
■ Various sustainable materials that make up "noon"
A new, naturally-derived material made from 100% food waste
A new material made by processing non-standard vegetables and food waste. It contributes to solving the problem of food waste, and since it is 100% natural, it will return to the soil after use. Another feature is that the material retains its own fragrance.
Plastering material made from upcycled denim scraps
This material is made by crushing scraps from denim factories in Japan and upcycling them into plastering materials. It is a recyclable material that can be used in production without using adhesives and can be reused by soaking it in water and peeling it off.
<Other materials used>
Felt-like fabric made from cork and wool waste, recycled aluminum honeycomb panels, ceramic molding materials made primarily from recycled artificial sand, unused wood from thinned areas in southwestern Saitama Prefecture, composite panels made from natural stone mined in Sri Lanka, and copper panels that have developed the patina that usually takes decades to form in just six hours.
