displays concept

There is a global movement to propose the next life cycle of discarded items through methods such as recycling, reuse, and upcycling. The word "sustainable" has become common, and society as a whole is moving from the era of mass production to the era of optimal production (producing only what is needed and eliminating surpluses).
Once a material or product has passed through society and completed its role, does it have no choice but to become garbage after that? If it is known that it can still be used as a material, even if there are too few of them or the collection route is not in place, it is time to consider possibilities other than throwing it away. Many of the current efforts to collect and reuse generally use factory waste materials or existing stock of ready-made products from the perspective of collection efficiency and material quality, but there are many materials that are overlooked by these efforts alone. The materials handled by "openmaterial", a new upcycling system that proposes a next life for discarded materials, are also materials that have once been consumed in society and have not been reused until now because they were difficult to collect. It is necessary to reconstruct the process from collection to reuse from a perspective that is not found in the current disposal rules, expand the possibilities of materials, and recycle materials.

■ displays Introduction
Various initiatives using sustainable materials to decorate the upcycled lounge

[OOH (Outdoor Advertising) Revitalization Project (Open Material)]
Despite its excellent durability as a material and its potential for recycling, most OOH materials are discarded due to intellectual property issues. Therefore, we have solved the intellectual property problem by applying a secret pattern to conceal the intellectual property, and by upcycling it, we have created value as a unique material originating from the local community. At openmaterial, we focus on the caps of function life*2 and material life*3, and use the power of concept design to propose a next life for discarded materials.

[ARCHISONIC(R) Felt / Impact Acoustic]
"Archisonic(R) Felt" is an environmentally friendly, high-performance sound-absorbing felt panel made from recycled PET material from used PET bottles. By making products from recycled (post-consumer) PET bottles, rather than from PET material produced during industrial production, we can contribute more to environmental protection. Impact Acoustic is a Swiss manufacturer that upcycles PET bottles and other materials into sustainable sound-absorbing products.

[SCRAPTURE (SCRAP MATERIAL UPCYCLE PROJECT) / NOMURA Co.,Ltd. Co., Ltd.]
This product is a practical and sustainable message art piece that appeals to emotions and memories by making interiors waste, which is usually hidden from view, feel more familiar. Unlike traditional scrap-and-build message-making, it upcycles the waste into new interiors materials for the next generation, circulating as a medium that expands the circle of co-creation. It will be displays in offices, international conferences, and art events, aiming to provide an opportunity for many people to think about a better future. Winners include the Gold Award at the "Sky Design Awards 2023" (Multimedia & Visual included Exhibition category), the Gold Award and the Yui Tezuka Award at the "57th Japan Sign concept design Awards," and others.

[Offcut pulp /Yamaden Paper Co., Ltd.]
"Offcut pulp" is a system that turns discarded event fixtures, thinned wood, and wood into pulp and regenerates it into paper, aiming to improve the waste material content and develop paper that can further contribute to a recycling-oriented society. Paper made from offcut pulp has a waste wood content of 70% to 80%. This high recycling rate was made possible by focusing on the fact that the pulp used for paper is derived from wood, and building a system to replace the pulp raw material with waste wood. In addition, the technology that supports this system uses the techniques of machine-made washi paper, a traditional Japanese industry, and aims to utilize sustainable washi paper technology.

[Display2.0 / Koshin Planning Co., Ltd.]
Display2.0 is a new attempt to update the entire manufacturing process, from the concept design of fixtures to the selection of materials and colors, and even the design of a circular process. By operating a circular manufacturing system utilizing 3D printing, it has become possible to reuse prototype samples and used fixtures that were previously discarded as raw materials. Furthermore, by selecting "cellulose acetate," a biomass material made from cellulose and acetic acid extracted from wood, as the molding resin, a reduction in environmental impact can also be expected. Koshin Planning will continue to challenge itself with next-generation manufacturing through 3D printing and circular systems.

[Colour Recycle System / colourloop Co., Ltd.]
Every year, 2 million tons of textile waste is disposed of. Three-quarters of this is incinerated as garbage. The "Colour Recycle System(R)" is based on the concept of "circulating materials by color" and is a new form of recycling for a sustainable society that recycles waste textiles that are difficult to separate by color, regenerating them into attractive materials. Together with its material development partner, Colour Recycle Network, colourloop Inc. aims to upcycle waste textiles in a more attractive way for a sustainable society.

[A one-of-a-kind upcycled package / Kanro Co., Ltd.]
Kanro Co., Ltd., known for its Kanro candies and Pure Gummy, is taking on a sustainable initiative by upcycling discarded packaging materials. Kanro has previously collaborated with companies in different industries on the two axes of sustainability and well-being as part of its Future concept design business. In this project, rather than simply creating cute goods, Kanro sought an initiative that only they could undertake, and arrived at the idea of upcycling packaging materials that would otherwise be discarded during manufacturing.

■ Talk event planning
Happy Sustainable concept design Meet Up - Vol. 3: Sustainable Materials and Circular concept design

Recently, a wide variety of sustainable materials have been attracting attention. Producers and companies are required to engage in manufacturing that does not waste resources and to build circular business models, while consumers are required to adopt a lifestyle that does not waste resources by taking action on everyday things such as reusing and reducing consumption, and choosing environmentally friendly alternative products. Based on the idea of creating a cycle of happiness through concept design, we consider from a concept design perspective how all those involved—makers, customers, participants, the environment, and local communities—should be able to create happy reciprocal relationships and grow together.
