Genkai Underwater Observation Tower to be renovated into an underwater immersive theater | NOMURA is in charge of planning, concept design, construction, digital direction, and opening PR for the observation tower

The first underwater observatory in Japan to feature 360-degree projection mapping
NOMURA is in charge of planning, concept design, construction, digital production, and opening PR for the observation tower.
The Genkai Underwater Observation Tower, located at Cape Hato in Genkai Quasi-National Park in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, reopened for the first time on April 1, 2024, after 50 years since its opening. This facility is the first undersea observation tower in the country to use projection mapping, allowing you to enjoy an immersive experience that makes you feel like you are underwater while looking at actual fish.
The Genkai Underwater Observatory opened in 1974 as the only underwater observation tower in the Sea of Japan. Located 7 meters below sea level, the observation room has 24 underwater windows through which you can see a wide variety of fish swimming, as well as seaweed and shellfish in their natural state. However, due to the decline in tourists due to aging and other factors, this time the tower was renovated. While retaining the appeal of the existing view, the underwater experience has been further expanded through digital production. Fish that can be seen around Cape Hado are projected onto the ceiling and walls, creating an immersive space that draws you into the underwater world. It is expected that this renovation will increase the number of tourists and revitalize the region. NOMURA, Ltd. is responsible for the planning, concept design, construction, digital production, and opening PR of the observation tower.

An immersive experience in a real underwater space. Increase the appeal of Genkai by creating added value.
The observation room has a mirror-decorated spiral staircase and diffused reflections on the walls, creating a kaleidoscope-like underwater world where ever-changing sea creatures and images are reflected. Another highlight is the impressive video show that takes viewers on a journey through Genkai's diverse underwater world. In line with the story of a journey through the sea of Genkai, you can enjoy an immersive experience that will make you feel as if you are immersed in the sea, using lighting technology such as 360-degree video, 3D sound, and water effect lights that express the swaying of water.

Project Contact
For 50 years, the Genkai Underwater Observatory has fostered connections between people and marine life. We wondered if we could use digital technology to update it to a new experience while preserving the memories of it as a place beloved by many people. The immersive experience of seasonally changing sea creatures and video footage, which can only be experienced here, may lead to new discoveries every time. We hope that you will also come to the observation tower and discover the charm of Genkai's beautiful sea and creatures.
