Mitsubishi Estate and NOMURA Co.,Ltd. begin demonstration experiment on the "relaxing effect of interiors spaces using solid wood and other materials."
Mitsubishi Estate Co., Ltd. and NOMURA Co.,Ltd. Co., Ltd. have been selected to jointly submit a project titled "Relaxation Effects of Interior Spaces Using Solid Wood, etc." to the "FY2022 Demonstration Project for the Effects of Wood Finishing in interiors Exteriors" (a project subsidized by the Forestry Agency, solicited by Wood Structure Construction Co., Ltd. and the Japan Housing and Wood Technology Center), and have commenced demonstration experiments.
In recent years, with the spread of hybrid work combining teleworking and in-office work, there has been a growing need for office spaces that are not merely workplaces but also comfortable places for communication and promote well-being. This demonstration experiment aims to scientifically demonstrate the effects that solid wood and other materials have on people, using office interiors spaces as a model, and to increase opportunities and utilization of domestically produced timber in the non-residential market by discovering new added value for solid wood and other materials. This time, we are focusing on the effects on sound. First, we will measure the sound absorption and reverberation properties of different materials (solid wood/non-wood) and thicknesses. Next, we will uncover new value by measuring the physiological responses of users in two experimental booths using materials with significant differences. Academic guidance will be provided by Professor Yuko Tsunetsugu of the Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences, University of Tokyo. The audible and inaudible sound survey will be conducted in cooperation with Associate Professor Mari Ueda of the Faculty of Information Science, Kanagawa Institute of Technology. The relaxation effect measurement survey will be conducted in cooperation with WIN Frontier Co., Ltd. The demonstration will continue from February 2023 onwards.
■ Wood Co_Lab (wood collaboration)
Mitsubishi Estate Co., Ltd. and NOMURA Co.,Ltd. Ltd. are leading a project to scientifically investigate the appeal and value of wood, exploring the question, "What's so great about wood?" Using "the five human senses" as a key theme, they will conduct various experiments, aiming to back up their findings with numbers and data. This project, selected for funding by the Forestry Agency, will also be implemented as one of Wood Collaboration's research themes.
