Nagasaki Kaido Kamome Market, concept design by NOMURA, Ltd., has won the Silver Award at the Nagoya Mosaic concept design Awards 2022 (sponsored by Nagoya Mosaic Kogyo Co., Ltd.).

The Nagoya Mosaic concept design Award was established in 2015 to solicit, judge, and honor beautiful examples of tile-decorated construction and construction examples that express the possibilities of tiles, in order to spread the appeal and possibilities of tiles. This year, the seventh time the award has been held, the theme was "Turn tiles into art!" and renowned designers, architects, and editors were invited to serve as judges to select outstanding works from a total of 328 applications.

Concept:

Nagasaki, the city of sea and light
On the façade of a newly constructed commercial facility in front of the ticket gates of Nagasaki Station, which is the land entrance facing the harbor, we used custom-made blue and white tiles with the motif of Seigaiha Waves to express the waterside of Nagasaki Port and the glittering light between the waves. Did. By mixing the raw material (glass) of Nagasaki's souvenir "Vidro" into the glaze, we create a sparkle that is unique to the region. Did.

Judge's comment:

This is the façade of a commercial facility selling Nagasaki food and souvenirs. Such facilities often use two-dimensional graphics to create a flat concept design, but Nagasaki Kaido Kamome Market boldly covers the top of the façade with custom-made tiles, using a variety of colors and complex patterns to create a three-dimensional, rich look. Furthermore, because the tiles are not overly specific in design, they can look like the surface of the ocean or a sky filled with flying seagulls, making for an ambiguous concept design will likely leave different impressions depending on the viewer.
