overview

With the aim of creating an opportunity to think about a society where we can live sustainably in harmony with nature, Mitsui Fudosan and Discover Japan co-hosted an event at Tokyo Midtown Hibiya to learn about and deepen our understanding of "wood." This was a real-world event themed around "Living with Wood," a special feature in the August 2023 issue of the magazine "Discover Japan."
As a symbolic space for this event, the first-floor atrium was designated as the introduction area. For displays of wood carvings, our company aimed to create a space that envelops the wood carvings, based on the concept of "how to interact with wood" as an experience that engages all five senses, surrounded by the scent, sound, and light of wood. Our company was in charge of design, layout, and construction of this space. In addition, a panel exhibition in the underground passage of Tokyo Midtown Hibiya introduced our R&D activity, "Hand-concept design," which involves designing with your hands, and displays actual prototypes.

Issues/requests

The purpose of this event was to create an opportunity to think about a society in which we can live sustainably together with greenery, and we received a request to create a space where people could experience once again the relationship between Japanese people and wood, and to introduce our company's initiatives that fit the theme of the event.

solution

As part of our social good R&D activities, we commissioned members of "Tezine," a group aiming to create businesses that balance the creation of enriching spaces with the development of forests for the future, to concept design the space.
In collaboration with forestry and timber producers in Hannō City, Saitama Prefecture, we utilized wood chips and cylindrical objects that would normally be used as fuel or civil engineering materials, transforming them into an installation in the introduction area. To fully utilize the value of wood, we are working with producers to ensure that all wood materials are reused even after the exhibition ends.
