overview

The "Kukai Room" is a permanent displays room that showcases the life and achievements of Kobo Daishi Kukai.
This time, we have revamped concept design while retaining the existing graphic content, and added a new map showing Kukai's journey, aiming to create a more easily understandable displays.
In addition, we have made the route through displays rooms easier to understand and have installed new signs in the introductory areas to help visitors better comprehend displays.

Furthermore, in the central area of displays hall, a projection of five words coined by Kukai onto a statue of Kukai was added, creating an experience that made it seem as if the historical figure Kukai was standing right there.
The characters used in this performance were recreated using AI that learned from Kukai's original handwriting, with the cooperation of the Faculty of Creative Engineering at Kagawa University.

By integrating visual information and spatial design, we have renovated displays environment to achieve both academic excellence and immersive experiences.

Issues/requests

The client requested a renovation to enhance the guidance functions for the permanent displays "The Life and Achievements of Kobo Daishi Kukai" and the Kobo Daishi faith and the Shikoku Pilgrimage, making it easier for foreign tourists to understand, as well as to increase the visibility of the displays room and attract domestic and prefectural tourists.

solution

displays panels have been redesigned with updated graphic concept design, now featuring both Japanese and English text, and new graphic panels have been created containing more detailed information about Kukai. As a result, a wider range of visitors, including foreign tourists, can now easily learn about Kukai.

- In the center of displays case is a statue of Kukai (a replica of the seated statue of Kobo Daishi owned by Gangoji Temple in Nara). With the cooperation of the Faculty of Creative Engineering at Kagawa University, Kukai's handwriting, recreated using AI, is superimposed onto the statue. This enhances the immersive experience while utilizing the existing displays structure, and adds a feature to deepen visitors' understanding of Kukai's words.

To attract visitors to displays room and enhance its appeal, we have installed highly visible signage at the entrance to displays room.
