[Project Description]
In Obi, a castle town with a long history in Kyushu, we used the former lord's residence within the Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings as the stage for a projection mapping project that told a story about the region's intangible cultural heritage.
[Customer's challenges/requests]
In this castle town, which boasts numerous tangible cultural properties, the next challenge was the transmission of intangible cultural heritage to future generations and people from outside the region. This led to the theme of "making the region's intangible cultural heritage known to a wide range of people by creating an engaging space that appeals to everyone, in conjunction with events that attract large crowds."
[Solution]
By using projection mapping, a visual technique, to represent the region's intangible culture like a "historical picture scroll," we believe we were able to create an opportunity to pique the interest of people of all ages and nationalities. Another advantage of visual expression is that we were able to create a highly artistic space without damaging the cultural heritage building, which we believe suggests future possibilities.
