overview

The Meiji Memorial Oiso Teien Garden was established in 2017 as part of measures to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Meiji era. It is currently being developed to display the historic mansion and garden together as one.
For the Okuma/Mutsu area, which opened to the public in November 2024, we planned and produced video content that introduces the architectural features and highlights of the mansion, displays convey the achievements and personalities of people associated with the mansion, and renovation projects to repair and strengthen the historic building. We also repaired the furniture and interiors.
displays uses a model to clearly and visually show the differences between the original and current buildings, and by making the roof adjustable, visitors can see not only the exterior but also the differences in room layout, which has been well received by visitors.

Issues/requests

Because the building in which displays are to be installed is a designated cultural property, we had to deal with the constraint that displays panels and other artwork could not be nailed to the building. In addition, we anticipated that there would be many visitors who wanted to enjoy the building itself and the view of the mansion from the building, so we needed to find a balance and ingenuity that would not block their view as much as possible, while still allowing them to see the information they wanted when they wanted to.
Additionally, we were required to create content that would convey to visitors the efforts that the many people involved had made to preserve the historic building, and the significance of those efforts.

solution

In order to minimize the burden on the building caused by displays, we devised a free-standing wooden stand with a wide installation surface to distribute the load. The explanation stand that explains the features of the various rooms was designed to be at a height that does not block the view and can be clearly seen, and we thoroughly checked the prototype on-site and made final adjustments to its size.
In one corner of the room, a video content is being shown that explains how the repair and reinforcement of cultural heritage buildings is made possible through the use of a variety of technologies, as well as the significance of such efforts. The video content includes documentary footage of the architectural renovation work, along with interviews with the craftsmen, designers, and supervisors involved in the work.
