[Project Description]
This project involved converting an old house located in Obi, Nichinan City, Miyazaki Prefecture, into accommodation facilities. Obi was designated as the first Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in Kyushu and Okinawa in 1977, and is an area lined with buildings with a uniform look. Therefore, from the perspective of preservation, the exterior design needed to be renovated with the premise of blending in with the scenery. Therefore, we aimed to create a facility that would attract visitors by giving it character through interior design and furniture decorations that had a high degree of freedom in concept design.
In addition, Nichinan City and NOMURA signed a comprehensive partnership agreement on January 28, 2017 to realize urban development in line with Nichinan City's concept of "Creators, Creators." On October 10, 2018, as part of the partnership agreement, they signed the "Regional Revitalization Corporate Exchange Program," and dispatched creative talent Yamano Yasutoshi, who specializes in spatial production, to Nichinan City to work on revitalizing the region. Together with various players, including Nichinan City and related companies, they are working on revitalizing the region, including creating the "Urban Development Guidelines for the Revitalization of Nichinan City's Obi District," holding the "DENKEN WEEK" event aimed at developing historic streets, and producing spaces for old houses.
[Customer issues/requests]
(1) I would like to renovate an old private house into a lodging facility targeting foreign tourists.
(2) As a strength of the lodging business, we would like to incorporate elements unique to the region.
(3) I want to create a space that feels like Japan.
【solution】
An old private house is one of the spaces where the Japanese lifestyle culture, the so-called "living style", is most concentrated. In this renovation plan, we wanted to make the most of the pillars, beams, ceilings, and other items that convey the scenery of the past, and to create a space that can be used comfortably by modern people with other elements. Therefore, the overall concept is "Post-Heritage: Inheritance and Transformation for the Next Generation," and we are searching for a new way to pass on culture. The tools were also selected with a consistent theme, and were composed of items that weaved Japan with various approaches without sticking to traditional techniques. As a result, we believe that this accommodation facility is able to provide a moving experience that will make foreign visitors to Japan more interested in Japan, and domestic tourists will be proud of Japan.
