overview

The Magical Literature Museum (Edogawa Ward Kadono Eiko Children's Literature Museum) is a public facility planned by Edogawa Ward to pass on to future generations the imaginative, dreamy worldview and achievements of Kadono Eiko, recipient of the Hans Christian Andersen Award, known as the little Nobel Prize of children's literature. It was created as a place to disseminate the wonder of children's literature to the world at large, and to foster rich creativity that will expand children's dreams by allowing children to freely choose books, pick them up and become familiar with them. For this project, we were in charge of the master plan, schematic design, and working drawings displays under Kengo Kuma and Associates, and were also in charge of the subsequent displays production. *We will be entrusted with designated management duties from the opening in 2023.

Issues/requests

Request from Edogawa Ward: By adding a facility that is imbued with the worldview of the internationally acclaimed Eiko Kadono, we would like to create an even broader "Edogawa Ward culture" by adding to the ward culture that Edogawa Ward has built up.
Basic concept of the entire business:
1. We will create a plan based on the following basic principles: "To inherit the great achievements of Eiko Kadono and the worldview of her stories as a culture that the ward can be proud of, and to spread the word about the greatness of children's literature," "To create a space where children can freely enjoy books on their own," and "To create a space where children's imagination and creativity can be developed through events and experiences."
② We carry out integrated design and construction of "architecture," "landscaping," and "displays" based on a basic concept.

solution

Starting from the thoughts of Edogawa City and Eiko Kadono about the museum, we were in charge of planning, designing and construction of displays under the direction of Kengo Kuma & Associates and art director Mario Kuboshi. As a method of embodying Eiko Kadono's worldview, the entrance to the facility was projected with projection mapping linked to a video featuring characters from her representative works, and "Koriko Town," which was embodied with colors and shapes under Mario Kuboshi's direction, was designed to allow visitors to find "their own favorite place." In addition, at the "Black Cat Theater," visitors can experience an interactive program that will expand their imagination. We designed and construction the graphics that convey Eiko Kadono's achievements and charms based on the basic "strawberry color" of the main building, and the character sculptures in Nagisa Park.
