overview

KANDA SQUARE, planned in the Kanda area—the second birthplace of Sumitomo Corporation—is a landmark in Kanda, a 21-story mixed-use office building born as part of Sumitomo Corporation's new urban development challenge. Our company was responsible for the interior interiors, signage design and construction, and furniture and fixture manufacturing of the commercial zone on the first floor.

Issues/requests

- You can experience the history and culture of Kanda.
We want to attract customers other than office workers by considering the compatibility between the store's interiors and the surrounding environment.
I want to create an atmospheric space that blends modern concept design with traditional craftsmanship.

solution

concept design concept is "innovation and tradition." By combining traditional craftsmanship with new techniques, the aim was to create a space that is innovative yet welcoming and comfortable for everyone, blending the weight of Kanda's accumulated history with a light, modern sensibility. Furthermore, the space was designed to foster the revitalization of a new community by allowing users to share and connect their "time, heart, and passions," creating the symbolic spaces of "The Square" and "Nishikikoji."

The project was advanced through a "guild" approach, where Sumitomo Corporation, designers, and craftsmen worked together and communicated directly. The involvement of three craftsmen from the planning stage broadened the designers' vision, and a positive flow emerged where ideas materialized through collaboration among the craftsmen.
