This facility in Iwate Prefecture is the first of its kind in Japan to be established at the national or prefectural level in relation to the Great East Japan Earthquake. In order to prevent a recurrence of the tragedy of the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami that occurred on March 11, 2011, it aims to pass on the facts and lessons of the earthquake and tsunami to future generations and to communicate the progress of reconstruction both domestically and internationally. With displays theme of "Protecting Lives and Living in Harmony with the Sea and Land," the facility allows visitors to thoroughly learn about the history of tsunami damage in the Sanriku region, the facts and lessons of the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami through displays, graphics, videos, and other materials.
