"Godzilla Science Exhibition ~Facing the Threat with Science~" is on display until January 27th! Godzilla has invaded the Science Museum! NOMURA Co.,Ltd. is in charge of planning and production.

Godzilla, created in 1954, has continued to reflect the scientific challenges and social anxieties of each era. This exhibition uses the imagination of "What if Godzilla appeared?" as a gateway to deepen understanding of disaster prevention and mitigation, as well as future science. It is a new learning opportunity where children and adults can experience the hopes and threats brought about by science and technology. This authentic science experience event combines entertainment and science education, allowing visitors to think about the relationship between our future and science, along with Godzilla.

NOMURA Co.,Ltd. was responsible for business concept, displays planning, design, production, construction, operation, and public relations.
We planned and produced an interactive displays using "Godzilla," a film that can be enjoyed by parents and children alike, to unravel the scientific and technological advancements depicted in the film from the perspective of real-world science. The entire displays is structured around the motif of "research notes" of scientists who work tirelessly day and night, and is designed to allow visitors to learn about the science that surrounds us, the science of disaster prevention and mitigation which is important in disaster-prone Japan, and the science of the future that will enrich our lives, in a realistic and engaging way.
In launching the exhibition, I was also responsible for selecting a supervisor to ensure the overall concept and scientific validity of displays. I chose an expert who could accurately and clearly explain the relationship between "Godzilla" and science in a way that was easy for children to understand, thus unifying the tone and accuracy of the information throughout displays.
Furthermore, we selected companies suitable for displays theme from among the many companies that support Japanese technology and invited their cooperation. We have devised displays that make each technology easy for children to understand and learn about in a fun way through Godzilla.

This exhibition features interactive events that allow visitors to experience simulated natural disasters, as well as lectures by researchers associated with the "Godzilla" franchise and prominent figures involved in its production. It also includes a science quiz rally open to all ages, and a collaborative project with a famous hobby magazine: the planning, production, and displays of an original Godzilla diorama. Furthermore, an original manga created specifically for the displays, linked to the ongoing Godzilla manga series, is being produced, creating a cross-media experience that spans both displays space and other media.
We envision this event, starting with the question "What if Godzilla appeared?", as a starting point for people of all ages, from children to adults. We want it to be more than just an entertainment event; it's a new learning opportunity where people can experience science as something personal, deepen their understanding of disaster prevention, mitigation, and future science, and provide an opportunity to think about how these issues relate to their own lives and society.
The "Godzilla Science Exhibition ~Facing the Threat with Science~" is being held from January 15th (Thu) to January 27th (Tue), 2026 at the special venue on the 1st floor of the Science Museum.

Highlights of displays
 

1. Science Learned from Godzilla
Through Godzilla films, we will introduce the progress of science and technology over the ages, as well as the social issues and messages behind them. Learn about science from film (i.e., fiction), and consider scientific literacy and how we interact with nature.

2. Godzilla Countermeasures and Disaster Prevention Science
The anti-Godzilla weapons that appeared in films such as Mechagodzilla and Super X, which were used to fight Godzilla,
This program compares real-world disaster prevention robots with the latest technology. It introduces how science and technology can "respond" (predict, recover, prevent, and mitigate) natural disasters on land, water, and in the air.

3. Giant Monsters and Future Science
Giant monsters have been born as a side effect of the development of science and technology. This program considers how humans should deal with giant monsters (i.e. nature), and what can we learn from nature? It explores the role of science and technology in creating a safe and secure society of the future.

We will hold a special science lecture series, inviting experts from various fields related to displays 's theme to share their insights on science and technology in the face of natural threats.

4. "Godzilla Science Quiz Rally"                                                     
Take part in a quiz rally about Godzilla and science and technology. The first participants will receive a certificate with their photo on it.

5. "Yashiori Operation Filming Location Tour"
This is a special tour that takes you to the rooftop of the Science Museum (the Yashiori Operation Forward Command Post), which was a filming location for the movie "Shin Godzilla".

● What is Godzilla?
The 1954 film "Godzilla" not only offered high entertainment value, but also addressed social anxieties of the time, such as those related to hydrogen bomb testing, and garnered widespread support.
The series features numerous monsters, not just Godzilla. Some of these monsters embody the "dark side" of human science and technology, such as environmental problems.
