Announcement of "DEBRIS", a rocket tank speaker made from rocket waste

noon by material record 2nd release
Release event will be held at CITAN (Nihonbashi, Tokyo) on Friday, June 27, 2025
NOMURA Co.,Ltd. Ltd. Group's R&D project "noon by material record (hereinafter, noon)" and the upcycling project "&SPACE PROJECT," which creates new products using space rocket waste, have collaborated to announce "DEBRIS," a rocket tank speaker made from rocket waste. In this project, with the cooperation of Taiki Town in Hokkaido, a town with a thriving space industry, rocket fuel tanks that were used for testing during the development process were procured. Field recordings were also made in Taiki Town, and original music was produced*. Our company is in charge of the planning of this project, design, layout of the speaker, production, and music production.
*Music production: World-renowned trackmaker/DJ GONNO
In the construction and interiors industry, which consumes vast amounts of resources, our company is engaged in various sustainable research and development projects starting with materials. With the theme of "materials = Earth's resources," noon creates speakers using sustainable materials such as construction waste, plastic fragments washed ashore, denim scraps, and fuel tanks that have completed their role in rocket development, challenging ourselves to create new values for materials through acoustic experiences.

This is the second installment of noon, and we will be looking at new ways to use space waste, which is expected to grow in the future. Projects and companies with different fields of expertise have come together. "DEBRIS" will provide an opportunity to turn your attention to resources, local attractions, and space through musical experiences.
A release event will be held at CITAN (Nihonbashi, Tokyo) on Friday, June 27, 2025. You can experience "DEBRIS" along with the performance of the original music.

About the objects, sounds, and music of "DEBRIS"

Object
The spherical object floating at the top was produced with the cooperation of metalwork artist Kazuhiro Toyama.
Iron, copper, aluminum and other inorganic metals that are elements of the earth are melted completely and then reconstructed into organic shapes to express the memory of the materials. It evokes the image of imaginary minerals floating in the air, depicting the romantic dreams of rockets.
acoustic
Inspired by the idea that "in space there is no gravity and the concepts of up, down, left and right do not exist," the headphones feature an omnidirectional structure that spreads sound in 360 degrees.
Music
We asked the world-renowned track maker/DJ GONNO to create a piece of music that captures the atmosphere and scenery of the place where the rocket fuel tank was born. Together, we conducted field recordings in Taiki Town, Hokkaido. The music, which was created by collecting sounds of the wind and waves, and the beacon sound of the rocket launch pad, was carefully composed to match the structure and sound of "DEBRIS."
GONNO|Music Production
He is active both in Japan and overseas as a DJ/producer representing Japanese house/techno. He has released numerous works, mainly on overseas labels. His re-edit work of Jamiroquai's "Virtual Insanity" with Kenji Takimi, which was used in the collection movie for JUNYA WATANABE MAN FALL/WINTER 2022, also attracted attention. In 2024, he launched his own label "Sanka", which has been attracting attention.

This upcycling project utilizes materials from space rocket development to create new products. Set in Hokkaido, a region with a thriving space industry, local manufacturing companies and creators from both within and outside Hokkaido are collaborating to develop products that make space feel more accessible. With the concept of "bringing space into people's lives," they have created a variety of products such as the "Space Tank Bench" (currently on displays at the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo) and the "Space Shelf," aiming to boost the space business and create a new industry in the modern age.
