NOMURA Co.,Ltd., Ltd. opens "Creative Lab.", a research institute for future creation that explores the future of space through research, discovery, and exchange.

NOMURA Co.,Ltd. conducts research and implementation to update the value of space through its in-house research and development organization, the "Future Creation Institute," in collaboration with companies and research institutions. Currently, it is working on six themes: future foresight, sustainable concept design, inclusion & art, regional concept design, the study Delight and Passion, and future prototyping. In February 2025, the company renovated its office and opened "Creative Lab.," a space within the company that will serve as the activity base for the Future Creation Institute.

"Creative Lab." is a space for people to connect and conduct experiments and challenges to create the future of space. The open 330m² space functions as a workplace where employees from various specialized fields can think about the future of space through cross-functional dialogue and actually create prototypes, as well as a showcase function displays and make public PoCs, demonstration experiments, and projects that are under consideration for implementation, both inside and outside the company, and a community function to build new relationships with external parties through research activities. The flooring materials and racks that make up the space are also actually used, which were produced through corporate co-creation. Long-term usage conditions will be verified and used to improve the space.

The Future Creation Institute will continue to update the space by creating new value through research, discovery, and exchange at the "Creative Lab."

"NOMURA OPEN LAB 2025"
As one of the initiatives utilizing "Creative Lab.", we held the "NOMURA OPEN LAB," a research exchange meeting to think together about the future of space. We held 22 talk sessions and presentations of various prototypes that could serve as ideas for solving social issues and inspiration for creativity. Over two weeks, more than 400 people from outside the company participated.

About concept design

"DEPOT" means a small logistics relay point for the rapid distribution of products. Our company aims to turn this space into a place where diverse ideas and hints for considering the future of space can be gathered, and at the same time, where prototypes can be rapidly created and proposed within the company and to society.

Implementation and verification of the developed product
At "Creative Lab.," we have installed products developed through co-creation with NOMURA Co.,Ltd. companies, creating an environment where they can be used on a daily basis. It also serves as a showroom where visitors can actually experience the products.

Development Case Study | Wood Floor Unit "WOOD FLOOR UNIT 3.2"

"WOOD FLOOR UNIT 3.2" (patent and design rights pending), a new building material utilizing domestically produced timber, has been jointly developed by six Japanese companies including NOMURA Co.,Ltd., Ltd., Mitsubishi Estate, and Rinrei. This product is a free-access floor utilizing CLT (Cross-Laminated Timber), offering high design quality with beautiful wood grain spread across the entire floor, functionality that takes advantage of the high strength of CLT, and environmental benefits that contribute to preventing global warming through the carbon sequestration effect of wood. 1,300 units were installed in a 330m² area at "Creative Lab."

Our company has been involved in the "WOOD FLOOR UNIT 3.2" product development from the conceptual stage, supervising concept design and construction techniques, and advising on details and construction methods to bring the proposed concept design to life in practice.
